Hey yall... my 92 f150 5.0 auto has been my daily for the last couple of months. During that time my temp gauge has never wen't past the "N" in normal. As it progressivly wamred up since then Ive noticed it gets alot hotter. It has went all the way to H a couple of times. At that point i know for a fact its overheating and i let it cool. But it will gradually climb temp get to about the A or the L then will cool itself down. I belive its my thermostat. It has a brand new water pump and has had fresh coolant put in. I am going to flush the rad here soon but any ideas would be appricated.
I hate to say this but if there is no visible leak form any lines or something. it could be a head gasket. I personally would replace that thermostat. and then if coolant is still mysteriously disappearing and overheating, I would suspect a head gasket.
it leaks a bit of oil but leaves no sign of coolant. Im running coolant and theres no white smoke but it is high miles. I would suspect a head gasket. 331k orignial moter and transmission
Does it become too hot in stop/go driving or freeway?
Disappearing coolant usually keeps system from holding pressure, which can cause overheating issues. My 302 had a constant slow leak, turned out to be timing cover to block gasket.
I say rent a system tester and pressurize it, should be easy to find. Clean everything well first. Oven cleaner is great for this.
it can be either or. Once it starts climbing it will continue to climb you let it cool down and it doesnt do it for awhile. But once it gets hot its hot and jus continues to slimb idling stop and go and freeway.
