. My Hey guys. My 01 is tired, and starting to get some blow by at 480k. I have a new cab to swap, so while it's off, I'm thinking about freshening up the motor. I have access to a low mile 95 7.3. I have new injectors, turbo, pedestal, and exhaust manifolds on the 01. Are the engines the same internally and externally (accessory bolt holes)? So can I just swap all of the parts and truck on?
Yes, long blocks is same minus cam which on the OBS has a lobe for the mechanical fuel pump, you will need to install a freeze plug on the hole. Other difference is the intake port on the heads, some of the older 7.3 iirc 94.5- e95 had 8 hole plenum bolts while the newer 95+-03 had 10 bolt. So keep that in mind. Other than that just swap evening attached to your long blocks to the 95 long block.
x2, and that 8 bolt vs 10 bolt can be a real problem. There's only 1 or 2 people making intake manifolds that match the 95.5+ engines and they want $300-$400/ set.
Maybe swap the heads to solve the problem? Do studs same time.
This can be a can of worms itself. That's 16 valves, 16 seats, and 16 valve guides that all need to be good. On an engine that's for some reason getting the hook. Plus the heads have to be flat within .004 as well as the deck of the donor or else all of it goes to the machine shop. That is what I call a Dirty Harry scenario. "Do you feel lucky punk?"
