looking for advice on upgrading a 91 351w for power
I am looking to upgrade the performance of my 91 Bronco XLT. I am considering upgrading whatever it takes. I would like to buy a few parts here and there and when I have it all go ahead and do it all at once unless there is a reason to upgrade some parts first. I do not have smog requirements.
I been looking for threads comparing different Cam options on a 351w and can't really find any. Any links to great threads would be appreciated. I am particularly interested in finding something that details how to calculate of figure out what pats work well together.
So here is a list of what I an thinking but I am sure I am missing something. Once I have a good idea about what I should get I will want to match it all up so any advice on calculating that or links to good threads or sites explaining that would be helpful.
Fuel pump
injectors
cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers, timing chain
Head
Headers (I have long tubes already but possibly there are better ones for the new setup)
It's pretty easy to double power output from that motor... a decent set of heads, cam, and exhaust will do it, the challenge will be in how you accomplish fuel management. The factory PCM isn't natively tunable so you either need a tuner module which have become quite difficult to get or a complete replacement PCM like the PimpX. The Stinger PimpX is not cheap but it's a more modern solution that is more user friendly to those that aren't super tech savvy.
I am not 100 on the transmission. I bought this a few months ago and the said they just had it rebuilt this last spring. It is a 4 wheel OD model so I assume E4OD. The tag is missing. It looks like it might be newer... I didn't get home until it was rather dark I can't really tell until I get a chance to look around on it this weekend. The gear selector is disconnected and the trans is hooked up to one of those racing "speed shifters" located in a totally different area. The thing is totally road warrior with lots of the electronics rerouted. Push button start and toggle switches to run on the different sets of electronics. So you can drive without half the stuff actually on (and leave everything on with the engine off). The key is only for unlocking the steering wheel. Honestly I was considering driving it hard and when the trans breaks worry about it. I understand if I upgrade the power I will tear it up. This is my toy car and I want to increase the power. I even considered running a compressor but I got talked out of it. I would like to see what I can get just doing some "basic things". Like changing the head and cam and then upping the fuel system and exhaust. Air intake seems to be not an issue with this model and more but for this quest here I am concerned about the engine power. Also for air intake I just haven't found something I like. I will also up the diff / axels ... but for now what I am concerned with is getting a good idea of what products work well together for the engine compartment. Every thing I find online seems not very helpful. I can't find a blog showing and good comparisons or even someone showing they used this with that and got it "right". To me that means not damaging the engine. I want to get the power out without doing real damage to it. I feel like this is a question asked many times but I don't seem to be good at finding the right answers.
I appreciate what you are saying about the ECU. That might be a better place to start. Getting a good tunable high flow fuel system is rather critical to real gains. The Bronco came with a box of parts. It included of course 7 new upgraded injectors... but I don't think they are higher flow just more modern with 4 holes. Decent ones actually... but I probably wont use them I would upgrade the fuel system to higher flow.
I am not interested in the RPM series per say as i will not be driving WOT much. I am discouraged by the current power off the line so the regular performer series seems right. But I am wondering if there is a better tope end set.
Also any advice on a good matching set of headers. Last I looked I couldn't find ones I liked. I will have to look again. I already have long tubes but if I am upgrading I probably want ones that are best for this top end.
That “top end” kit from Summit Racing is for a carburetor. So now you want to remove the EFI and put a carb on the engine? How do you plan on controlling the electronic transmission and dropping the fuel pressure from 35lbs to less than 10lbs? Did you read what was written in post 2? You can put a more aggressive but not crazy cam in the engine with better heads and get more power while keeping the engine part of the computer happy since the same computer also controls the transmission.
