Hey guys
first post, always a lurker. Ive had my 2017 f250 since 2018, I've racked up 160k on it. I've had zero issues with this truck besides a BCM shorting out and some lariat creature comfort issues now and then like a seat heater etc..
Recent, I was backing up through a sand pit, while pushing an empty dump trailer, which is approx 3k lbs. I always have to 4H it through this sand patch, and I've done it many times, as it's on the side of my house, I live in the woods. Anyway, in reverse there was a loud bang, it was very very loud, almost like the hitch bottomed out on something. There's nothing under the truck. This has happened about 3 times, only in 4h, only in reverse, no warning lights, no other issues.
The truck has a 8 inch pro come lift I installed myself years ago, and is on 37 inch tires. I know it could be anything with the miles, but anyone run into this? Is the empty trailer weight causing the issue? Thanks.
Was the 4x4 light illuminated on the cluster? I'd guess the is ESOF transfer case, so you're relying on a motor to fully engage the synchro teeth. Usually, the light will not illuminate until the shift is fully seated in position.
In the old days, a loud popping when in 4H was usually a sign the chain in the transfer case is jumping a tooth. Pushing a loaded trailer in the sand is pretty stressful on the drivetrain. It could be your 8" lift banging around. That's a lot of lift to be pulling trailers in sand.
3k lb. trailer + sand + pushing not pulling + 4wd = 4 Low.................. along with what the others have said about shifting to four wheel drive sooner to achieve a positive engagement..
