Hey well after I got the truck running, tinkering around like oil change, routine tune up, fuel pump, and undercoating a lot of the truck and getting the drivetrain for the rear wheels in, ( I have NOT gotten the 4x4 drivetrain in, waiting on the clamps...
alright, started the truck and left it in what I thought was nuetral, the truck seems to go in reverse. no reverse lights, and you can't get it to go into any gear, I have a new slave cylinder thats the external that holds the clutch fluid, or as it says DOT 3 brake fluid. is that the problem? or would it by chance be the 4x4 drive train? or would it have something to do with the transfer case?
Any other ideas or help would be greatly appreciated! you guys have helped me out with my first post so I have trust to figure the problem out again! thank you guys!
I can't determine via that post what year, model, engine, transmission, etc. we're talking about, nor what is installed, what isn't, etc. Clamps for a 4x4 drivetrain are needed, so it's not installed? But you have a transfer case installed?
84 f250 with 460 cubic inch 7.5 liter. the transfer case is up on the frame, and just the rear drivetrain is hooked up. that shouldnt matter should it? considering you should be able to use the rear wheels in 2H? and yes when you have the shifter in what seems to be nuetral, and you left off the clutch a bit, it rolls backwards like reverse, event though no reverse lights are on
Not sure what trans you have, but sometimes its possible to put the shifter in wrong. I suspect if you remove the shifter you will find that the slots that the shifter align with arent lined up. Use a screwdriver to move the one for reverse to align with the others.. all should be centered. Then put your shifter back in to fit in the slots.
Even if the 4x4 front suspension and drive-shaft aren't connected, the transfer-case will act like an "under-drive".
That is, you can engage it in 2H, 4H, N, or 4L and the truck will behave accordingly.
Since the front suspension isn't hooked up and the drive-shaft isn't either, You can put it in either 2 High or 4 High and you should get power to the rear wheels.
Put it, preferably, in 2 High. If it's a NP203 transfer case with all-time 4x4, make sure it's in high and the differential in the transfer case is unlocked via the position of the shifter.
And yes, if you do any work with the transmission, make sure you get the transmission's gear shifter in properly. If things don't line up, you'll find out that you can't really go into gear properly.
I'd start by making sure that the transfer case is not in neutral and that it is positively engaged.
The backup lights not coming on in reverse could be due to the switch down on the transmission, or it could be that you aren't going into gear for various reasons.
Alright I have the solution after me and my cousin played around we took the shifter off and it was locked up, that is why it seemed like it was in neutral when it was locked in reverse. After we replaced this the clutch slave cylinder unit was replaced. This was tricky bc it's under the dash and the plate for the steering column is right in the way, and the metal of the firewall broke bc of rusted nuts so we made a bracket for it to hold so the clutch pedal comes back out. After bleeding the clutch and putting it up in 2H it drives! Thanks for all the help guys. I appreciate everyone and glad we have knowledge here you don't find very often with the computer era
