Ticking Sound
Just replaced my heads along with new lifters new pushrods and new injectors in my 1996 F 150 with the 5.0l and it sounds like I have a severe tapping sound on the passenger side. Held a scope to the oil pan with no noise and to the valve cover also with no noise. Held it to the exhaust manifold and have a pretty good ticking sound. Noticed what seemed to be a crack next to number two . Does it constantly from 3 minutes after cold start under load and at idle. Can the manifold sound lime a bad lifter or main bearing tap ??
Also it has a rough idle and sounds lime a kids train horn from time to time at idle and when I'm driving

How interesting, I just did my lifters as well and I had a tapping noise before and after installing them. For me I got a p0385 (misfire) code and it seems too be intermittent misfire as it's only there 70% of the time. For me it also happens at idle and under load but sometimes it runs just fine. I noticed yesterday when I started it that it started to run well but a decent bit of smoke/steam was coming from the exhaust. I suspect mine to be spark plugs (perhaps cracked by where the boot attaches) or potentially plug wires (the boot and the wire keep coming apart when I pull them off the plug to check). I have ordered new plugs, wires, and dist cap as well as a new fuel filter.
