The radiator fan on my truck ('78 F100 w/ 302) is not fully housed in the shroud. The blades stick out about 1.5", which makes working on my truck interesting while it's running! I have about 6" of space between the fan and the radiator. It seems a 2-3" spacer is the solution, but I already have a 3" spacer, and I don't see any 5-6" spacers online. Can I stack another 2" spacer, or is there a different solution?
Also, is there a trick to adding the spacer without pulling the grille and radiator? If I detach the shroud and push it towards the engine, can I access the bolt heads?
For cooling purposes that appears to be the correct setup. If the fan is to deep in the shroud, then the shroud wont properly break the vortex at the end of the blade tips. Therefore I would leave it alone.
I have mine in almost flush in the shroud, vortex is old air already used to cool, fan is by then pulling the next batch through. I have longer spacers on a shelf in a cabinet, but I think only using a shorter maybe 3" one presently. 351M
Actually a vortex is a recirculation of air at the blade tips which pulls in already used air and reduces
the efficiency of the fan to pull fresh air thru radiator.
