Is there anyone out there that has installed a 545 in a 1977 F250 Camper Special. 2WD
I am about to get the motor back from the builder and would like to hear what some of the problems to look out for are, hopefully even some solutions.
My Motor will have AFR heads (CJ style) I am really running up against a wall with finding headers. If I run fender-well headers will I have to install a body lift?
I also have dual tanks, how did you route the exhaust?
Any help will be hugely appreciated,
Thanx
Howard
545 should be interesting. Is it a low compression flat tappet cam torque monster? Or a fire breathing 12:1 roller cammed beast?
On the headers, I'm not sure, but you could always bite the bullet and have some custom made. Not going to be cheap, but might be the only avenue other than butchering your truck.
The motor is roller cam, but not too bad on compression, it will run pump gas (premium) Should Redline around 6000 rpm. I am putting a Holley sniper X-flow EFI system with the Hyperspark Distributor on it for computer controlled ignition timing! I have already figured out the dual tank and the return lines for all of that, I am also using a FiTech Force Fuel Surge tank for storage/ pump with the mechanical pump feeding the tank. I was able to keep the dash all stock didnt need to add any switches. New 3/8" Stainless fuel lines already installed, along with a 4 core aluminum Radiator with 4 12" electric fans. I think I will end up with the fender well exit headers from MadDog and just hope for the best but have the welder ready to go if needed. As soon a Scotty J get the motor done I will start sharing the Pics.
Thank for your input!
Howard
Sounds like a helluva build! I like the idea of using Sniper EFI on a street-driven vehicle, and the Mad Porter/Scotty J is one of the best out there when it comes to 385 series engine builds.
Looking forward to seeing dyno numbers if you're going to have a few pulls done. Check out post 36 here. He got 458HP and 520 lb-ft and it looks like he used stock heads, and that was with "only" 460-ish cubic inches.
Buy fenderwells that supoosedly fit the chassis, get a thick exhaust flange for the exhaust port layout on the engine, cut, modify, weld. Unless you want something exotic like SS headers, then it'll all be fab work.

Ok. I will go with the Maddog headders and be fully prepared to modify them. They have a 3/8" flange if I remember correctly. They look pretty well made!
Unfortunately, Stan's is permanently closed. I was counting on him when I began the build. The AFR heads are the Bullitt 280's, they are CJ, style ports. I talked to Mad Dog and they made me feel very comfortable that they will fit without very much modification. I purchased them and now I will hold my breath. I will keep this site informed of what it ends up requiring and exactly what I have for parts. Hopefully it helps someone, someday.
That’s too bad about Stan’s headers….I bought a set about 20yr ago that were worth every Penny.
what size primary does Scott want you to run and what size are the mad dogs?
I think you will struggle to have traction up to about 65 mph.
Scotty said 2" primaries, The Mad Dog headers are 2" Primaries and 3 1/2" Collectors ( Part# 9230) Yes I cried a little when I found out Stans closed as he was also in my Backyard. About 15 miles away. I was going to have him do a complete exhaust.
I have traction bars to install, along with all new Polyurethane Suspension bushings and cab bushings too. I went with a set of Custom Caltracs for the traction bars. But secretly I am looking forward to letting the tires go at 45 mph.
Next onto the search for new rims and tires to try and get a little more traction.
Can you post up some details of what made the cal tracs custom?
Looks like they already offer a kit for 73-79 F series.
They don't make them for an F250 2wd with 3" wide leaf springs, I also believe (I could be very wrong) that the springs for a Camper Special with a Dana 60 and 7700GVW are longer than the 9" that comes in an F100. It was super easy to give them all the dimensions. They have an online form. I called to inquire about my application and the salesman told me to fill out form . Oh and also U-bolt length for spring and pad thickness.
