1976 Ford F100 490 4 on the floor

I have googled, but can't find a straight answer. From the factory was reverse up and to the left or down and to the right?
My current setup is down and to the right, but just wondering if that was after market or factory. The standard shift know was replaced with an 8 ball so that is no help. Going to order a new one, but just wondering.

In 1976 there were two four speed transmissions used. The Borg-Warner T-18 and New Process 435, reverse for both transmissions was to the right & down.

The earlier T-18's (Maybe pre-1973--not sure) were to the right & up for reverse.

The T18 might have changed during 73 sometime, Ive heard others say that. I have a T18 from 73 that previous owner swapped in my 72 f250 and that one was still up and right for reverse.

You mean 460....?
ND says...
NP435 = aluminum top cover w/8 bolts
T-18 = cast iron top cover w/6 bolts

Warranty Plate TRANS code: A = NP435 (N-1965 only) / F = Warner T-18 / P = F350 Warner T-19.
Warner shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads on/off.
NP435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) has two notches, is retained to shift tower by two pins.

Originally NP435: Reverse-down towards the seat while Warner T-18: Reverse-up towards the dash.
The reverse shift pattern was changed circa 1973, but I can't recall for which of these 4 speeds. (I believe it the NP435)
Note:There's another 4 speed: RUG SR-OD Single Rail 4 Speed Overdrive introduced in 1978 F100/150 300/302, TRANS code B

If I tried to drive a truck with ANY reverse (that was NOT full right and down) I would be grinding it like hambuger.

Originally, the T-18 Reverse was up...towards the dash, while the New Process 435 was down...towards the seat..

Circa 1973, Ford changed the T-18's shift pattern, Reverse was now...down towards the seat like the NP435

I copied that word for word from YOU a long time ago, so yea NO unless you want to give that to yourself. I did not include the talk about the NP-435 locking cap removal. It does not apply to this thread.
