I'm looking for the right Ford blue color spray paint for my 79 F250. I've looked in my local auto parts stores and also the local hardware\home improvement stores. The two shades of Ford blue I found were dupli-color brand #1606 from O'Reilly's. One was a darker shade and the other was a lighter shade in color than the one I'm looking for. Couldn't find krylon #1923 or plasti-kote #224. Lowe's told me they need a 6 digit # to maybe order the krylon brand. Has anyone else gone through this? What solution did you come up with? Another option I thought about would be to custom color match it over at the Whittier paint shop. $28 a can is kinda steep though. They did a great job matching the paint on my 07 convertible pt cruiser. Any other ideas?
I'd bring the part in and get it matched if you want to to exactly match. Lots of places have matching colors or will match by paint code, but with old parts it's hard to tell how their life has changed them. They could be darker or lighter than when new. If you bring it in and get paint matched to how it actually is now it should match.

My main thought was to match the color so I can preserve the white Ford numbers but I doubt I'll ever make it into a show truck that I need to keep those numbers on there. I'm mostly interested in keeping it mechanically sound as opposed to what it looks like. Kinda like the owner. It's just my CDO (it's like OCD except the letters are in alphabetical order as they should be) that has me over thinking it on the paint. I'll probably end up going with the lighter shade of Ford blue, be done with it, and move on to the next challenge. Like you said, that lighter blue will most likely darken up a little with age and heat of the engine bay. I appreciate your input!
Something has changed because I can't find the correct blue anymore. I've used the Duplicolor for years and it's just not right anymore. the color you have is about as close as I've found currently, the blue your air cleaner is painted with it the older blue and incorrect. .
I'm going to try Motor Coator and see if they have the correct color.
I had the same dilemma when it came time to paint the engine when I had it apart. I decided that for my purposes the DupliColor 1606 was the closest to the original.

Years ago Ford Corporate Blue was close.
This is Duplicolor 1621, as close as I've found around here but it needs to be darker in my opinion.
If you want a perfect match the only option is to shoot it with a photo gun and custom mix something. You'd be better off mixing a pint/quart of paint and investing in a cheap spray gun rather than preloaded cans. Look at touch up guns if you want something smaller. With the gun you can control spray thickness and pattern and it's alot easier to feather in blends.
Matching to an existing color is gonna be difficult for multiple reasons. Age is gonna change the original shade. All cars had variations in paint color, most of the color charts you see are just options guides. Body shops have paint chip book that will list variations that are know, like there might be 4 "whites" with the same paint code, but one has slightly more red tint in the formula, one has more blue, one has more yellow, one has more black. Trying to color match a white that has 7 different variations wasn't fun before they came out with the photo guns, we repainted a few cars multiple times before we got it right. Then you don't know what formula the spray paint companies are mixing to and if it's even being mixed accurately. Maybe they need to change the color slightly for trademark reasons if they aren't licensed to reproduce it by Ford?

that darker blue is definitely the wrong color. Let us know how the motor coator turns out. I ended up ordering the symour's brand Ford paint. Duplicolor is not the same.
