Hey guys, started a thread in the 99-03 group under the wrong conditions. Truck is a 2002 f350 crew cab 4x4 7.3l roll along package(classic trucks) so overhead console which goes the length of the cab, ground effects etc. Problem is Fuse #35 pops intermittently, also door locks do not work neither does the key fob. Curtesy lights do not work when opening doors, they do operate fine off dimmer switch. Also could not communicate with VSM via snap on scanner. I did find a wire at the running board that is completely bare and was able to create a short at frame that blew fuse#35 only problem is I did this test with the curtesy lights on via headlamp switch to provide power to the running board light. Via owner of the truck this issue is random and with all doors closed while driving with no running lights/ radio on etc. This wire I believe is tapped into the Blue/violet wire. So with curtesy lights off I could not create the short again. so question is , is it possible the instrument cluster can internally short intermittent and cause this fuse to blow? Could this be possibly caused by the VSM? Just would like to rule this out. The entire truck is tore apart right now as I try to find this problem. Any help is appreciated.

I had VSM issues a few years ago and will tell you what I know. First off, if the VSM is malfunctioning, often it will "reset" for a short time if you remove fuse #19 and re-install after a minute or so. The reset worked for me for a couple of weeks at a time at first but eventually only a few hours. I did discover that there is a link between the cluster and the VSM on 2002-2003 trucks, we have a "hybrid electronic instrument cluster" and it is linked to the VSM via the accessory delay relay which is part of the cluster. In my case the cluster was fine, and a new VSM fixed all my issues. I did not have fuse #35 ever melt though. Unfortunately VSM replacement options are slim to nothing presently, I have heard of someone taking theirs apart and re-soldering and I also heard rumors that Circuit Board Medics may be able to fix them. If you get results by removing and re-installing fuse #19 then I would say repair or replace the VSM is your next step in ruling out faulty parts. You could also disconnect all the accessory wiring to the running boards etc. and see if the fuse holds.

I will try this. My major concern is no communication via scanner. Problem with disconnecting accessories is since it's such in Intermittent problem, im also doing injector cups during this process so I have time at the moment to mess with this short. So far though I have just about every trim panel removed chasing wires. Would love it to be a dead short
