I am getting so much conflicting information on what ATF to use on my '95 E4OD transmission. I am doing a filter/fluid change and I have the filter, but WHAT type of ATF do I use? Mercon is not made anymore and Mercon V is the most updated version of it...
Mercon V is what Ford now recommends. The Mercon LV is NOT to be used. I just changed mine and used Mercon V and put in a new cork gasket and new filter. All good.
OK. TY for the info. I have been over on so many sites searching for the correct answer but not getting anywhere. Is there any specific brand etc to use or not? Would synthetic be good or not? I have no idea if the trans in my truck has ever been serviced...I am just getting fluids etc changed after it was recovered back in January from being stolen. I had only had it less than 3 weeks before it was stolen and hadn't had the chance to do any servicing to it.
Should I flush the trans cooler or not? I am not really confident about flushing such an old system if it isn't necessary...
Re: the brand. Any of the Name Brand synthetics of MerconV should serve you just fine. The trans holds about 18 quarts if you drain the whole system. I only change the pan about 6 quarts total. When you change the filter the orange gasket on the filter may be left in the hole when you remove it. Mine was. Just make sure. If you want to change the entire system of 18 quarts there is a procedure for doing it.
Here is a video on how to do the whole thing. https://www.google.com/search?q=how+...client=gws-wiz
Synthetic is better, but if you're not working the trans hard it probably isn't worth the extra cost.
Use a fluid that says MERCONV on the front. Don't use one that says it can be used where MERCON V is required. The latter doesn't have a license and may or may not meet the MERCON V spec.
