Source for in tank electric pump & sending unit - F700 fire truck
1988 F700 429 4 valve fire truck - I can post the VIN later if needed.
I’ve searched several combinations of words/phrases about these pumps but haven’t been able to find any helpful threads (but generally speaking I suck at using search functions ).
The gas that was in the tank smells like it’s been in there since 1989. As you can imagine, the pump and sending unit are not in good shape.
The tank is salvageable - I pulled the fill cap, pump, sending unit and breather cap and pressure washed it. I let it drain then tilted it on its side and gave it a few good thumps with a rubber mallet to knock loose all the rust. I’m giving it a couple days to air out then will shop vac all the loose stuff and use CLR on what remains.
I think I can clean up the pump hangar and reuse it but still need the pump. It’s a Tokheim 558 (also found 585A on it).
I also found a Ford part # stamped in the sending unit but of course don’t have that note with me at the moment so I’ll provide that later as well.
Edit: The number on the sending unit is E5HT-9275-EB
Here’s the tank ID tag and pump.
Thanks in advance.

I just put "tokheim 558 fuel pump" in google and came up with all kinds of hits. First up is NOS via E-bay.

Many many more hits.

There were several hits on google with the phrase you used but as I’ve checked them out, some are outdated/no longer for sale and others are showing as out of stock.
I’ll keep searching.

Long shot:
Main
I see some 24V and some 12V.
Maybe:
https://nospartsltd.com/?s=1988+f700+fuel+pump
BTW "4V" in reference to your 429 is 4 venturi, not valves. 4 BBL carb in other words.

And here’s where my lack of searching skills starts to frustrate someone other than me…
I really did try to figure this out before responding.
All I’m finding on this site is a search by part number (the “Inventory” link). I don’t have a Ford part number for the pump. Searching the inventory with words doesn’t work and “558” only seems to net results for hardware.
For reasons I can’t explain, this site won’t load. Even trying to copy and paste or going directly to the front page isn’t working. Maybe it’s an issue with my phone??
Yeah, everyone knows that. I was using the shorter version of “butterfly valve” when I posted that.
Thanks for the info - I’m so used to identifying the number of valves on Ford engines I didn’t think twice about it.
Thanks for the continued assistance.

I agree a universal pump would be cheaper but this is a customer vehicle and they want it as close to original as possible for the sake of not having to modify the fuel system.
I actually ended up finding a sending unit at the local dealer - no idea why they had it in stock but it’s one less thing to deal with.
How/where did you find those numbers? I am TRYING to improve my search skills.

Short answer: I had an old truck that used this pump, so I had the original 1963 number jotted down.
But I just now googled "1988 Ford F-700 electric fuel pump" and it hit on Auto Zone with a version of the 6638 number they have active stock on.
Ford and IH used that pump for about 30 years - probably every farm and fire dept. from Duluth to San Antonio had one at one time or another.
I'm guessing that a positive 5 psi all the way from the tank to the carb prevented a lot of summertime "vapor lock" problems with the big gas motors.

I tried searching the exact same term (and other variations) and all I got was externally mounted pumps.
This isn’t the only customer I have with an older, medium duty truck like this - I service at least 4 other 70’s to 80’s era dump trucks (Ford and GM) that my customers use for hauling grain. Oftentimes I can find part numbers on rock auto by looking up a vehicle with the same engine size, but couldn’t find a 429 Ford engine this time.
At any rate, thanks to both of you for your help.
EDIT
I need to correct this statement - I was misremembering the details.
It wasn’t that I couldn’t find the 429 engine on rock auto - they do have part’s listings for an 88 F700 429 - it’s just that they only show a mechanical fuel pump, not an electric one.

Ford used those electric Tokhiem pumps from the late 50's up into the 80's. They were standard equipment with Super Duty gas V-8's like the 534, optional on the smaller engines. I used to have them on the shelf. Changed a bunch over the years but they were very reliable.
This is the 3rd fire truck we’ve helped him get going, and I’m sure he’ll keep adding to the fleet as opportunities arise.
Just for kicks I tried giving the old pump power and ground and it did run, but it sounded awful. Imagine a coffee can with marbles or coins inside being shaken - that’s how it sounded.
I was willing to attempt disassembling it for repair, but even if I could source the parts, my boss made a very excellent point - “He’ll get just across the state line and it’ll quit again.” - that’s when we started hunting for the pump.
The replacement pump is supposed to be arriving this afternoon - not sure if I’ll have time to get everything put back together but I’ll post the update when I can.
Thanks again to all for your help.
