Slow Crank

Lately my truck has been cranking slow. The batteries and alternator are under one year old and I’m reading 14.2 volts in the cab. Additionally the motorcraft starter is only a few years old. The truck turns on but it seems the problem will only get worse. So far all I have done to troubleshoot is check the battery terminals. My truck usually starts as quick as a car and is running well once turned on.
thanks for the help

Verify the starter is getting that 14.2. If so, pull starter and have it checked.

Wires, they are probably corroded, or bad grounding so clean all grounds leading to the engine, and chassis.

I should be able to clean them tomorrow. Definitely made sure the batteries were properly connected before posting this time. Lol. The truck took about 25 seconds of cranking this morning at 60° tons of white smoke and smelling like fuel than drives normal. The smoke quickly went away.

I drove the truck 2 miles to the store now it cranks up very strong despite over a week of slow cranking. Just did 5 cranks not waiting for the wts light all went well.
They mystery deepens of course the problem didn’t self repair….

There may be a draw somewhere pulling the batteries down overnight.

Have you checked the starter bolts? It is extremely common for those to come loose and strain the starter. Takes about a month for a loose bolt to ruin a starter, if used daily. It’s a good idea to check starter bolts each oil change. Remember the starter grounds to the block with pressure. If the bolts loosen up you may not have a good ground there!

About to get towed in the starter solenoid has a missing screw so it’s separated….not to impressed considering it’s about 2 years old motorcraft any recommendations on obtaining a starter? Maybe time to go the 6.7 route

I like my genuine Denso, but two good friends of mine have the 6.7L modified starter and really like it. If I didn't have the Denso, the 6.7L would be my choice.

There is another option and the name escapes me, but @Wes444 should be able to name it.

took it apart and reassembled with the one mounting screw for the solenoid still nothing. Now when I turn the key the starter dosent try to go at all. I checked the fuse panel and attempted to start the truck by placing the solenoid line to the battery terminal and nothing. Could be possible I fried it over the past several weeks

Did the solenoid click or anything when jumped to the battery? It could be a cooked motor or possibly just a fried solenoid. What happens if you jump the large lug going into the motor housing straight to 12v? If it still won't spin then either the brushes are toast or the windings blew.

While you have the starter out, do yourself a favor and put some steel thread inserts into the aluminum adapter plate. Get the long ones that will go the full thickness of the plate. M10 x 1.5.
