There is a snap ring on my 3 speed light duty transmission which does not appear on the manual drawings. It is on the bottom groove of the main shaft right above the helical splines. In the picture the helical splines are at the bottom. The smooth section above with the groove in the center inserts into the bearing which is pressed into the rear bearing retainer. The section with straight splines above that is where the drive gear for the speedometer cable resides followed by the snap ring which secures it.
I’ve also pictured the snap ring which is apparently broken on the right side. It still seems secure but I don’t want to take chances.
This ‘broken’ snap ring appears to have an inside diameter of 1 3/16” and is .045” thick.
I cannot find a replacement. Looking forward to your advice.
That is the snap ring which secures the drive gear inside the rear bearing retainer. The notch in at the top of the picture. This one is slightly larger by maybe an 1/8". It does not appear in the drawings. I am checking with VanPelt to see if he can identify it.
What year is your truck? Sometime in '51 there were some changes to these trannies, including deletion of a slinger in that location. But I think the groove yours has is not for a snap ring, it's just a relief to allow machining the rear section of the shaft. See what Mac VP says.
This is my main shaft, which is the later version. You can see the groove is not fully machined, and there is a similar one at the front of the spiral gear.
