Geez. I give up. Will never learn. Looking for a 7.3 now but that won't happen fast enough. It happened to my 2011 2016 now the 2019. 6.7's. Can I blame Ford for putting it next to the fuel filler instead of under the hood or another place? maybe hard to see? I put on 35k a year and very busy. Was tired yesterday after 500 miles and have a bad cold. And after a liftime age of 74 yrs now of dumping stuff in the fuel tank. In ther early junk car and truck days Motor Medic, fuel line antifreeze, carb cleaners, etc. Now anti gel as I live in Norther NH. Plus other diesel additives.
I was lucky this time. Only 1 1/2 qts. It was in my drive and didn't start it. Had it towed to service and they got it inside without starting then dropped the tank and washed it out with water. Will have it back to day.

we are customers…what is the fail safe to prevent this…and why doesn’t the water separator work and separate the def which is more like water than fuel.
glad you caught it .
Def sinks to the bottom of the tank . Not sure how much def it would take to reach the tank pick up strainer.
if I ever pull my tank I’m putting in a drain valve so I can periodically drain the water the fuel stations pump in and and Def that goes into the tank on accident.
NEVER open the fuel and def holes at the same time. Another thing get the hose from ford that locks into the def hole. There is no reason to add a bunch of stuff to the fuel except for anti-gel in winter. Glad you caught your mistake.

Sorry....but no, you really can't blame anyone but yourself. Sucks it happened, but at least you figured it out before you blew your fuel system.
I think I'm blaming Ford engineers for this as well. Should of seperated the two like the GM engineers did.

I'm leaning that way too. I talked to the service mechanic and he actually mentioned that as well before I did to him. I bet the older tanks had them. probably ilegal .

i google the drain tank legality question.
not 100% positive…but so far..one source says it can’t be more 3/4 of an inch below the lowest point of the tank.
For me, I intentionally open the cap for def before doing anything else, then pick the correct pump if at station with bulk def or open the jug versus having the pump/jug in my hand ready to pour, and opening fuel fill out of habit. To me it makes it a more intentional action, and less likely to make the mistake.

Motorcraft used to supply this nozzle with their DEF containers, once upon a time. If you use Motorcraft DEF, the only other option now is to use a funnel to fill your tank. And this is a messy operation! As you are sure to overfill the tank every time! Leaving behind the white flakey spillage on the side of your truck.
As stated in other reviews, this nozzle eliminates all of this, as it stops filling once the DEF Tank is full. Another important reason why you should keep this nozzle on hand is it prevents any residual DEF in the fill line to the tank. This is especially important in the Winter months because DEF will freeze at 12*F. The DEF Tank is heated. However the fill line is not. And it is sure to freeze and crack the fill line. The $8.25 you pay for this nozzle is a lot cheaper than replacing the line to the DEF Tank!
You can use this nozzle repeatedly. And it does fit the Blue DEF 2.5 gallon containers. I am not sure if it will fit their larger containers. Nor do I know if it will fit other brands of DEF. I typically only use Motorcraft DEF or Blue in a pinch.
This is another tool that you should have in your truck! I would recommend this to anyone that owns a Ford Super Duty which requires DEF."

Thanks for the link. I may purchase one. Since I have a fleet card now and only fill up at truck stops in the big rig lanes, I'll probably just buy def when it's time from the pump. I filled the truck up with 5 gallons of def from jugs when I bought it and haven't had to refill it yet.
Well got the truck back. Total of $1200 ish. Towing 3 miles $ 365. Loss of fuel 15 gal x $5 per.= $75. Labor inscluding $ 40 parts. $520.
Last time I did it in a long hard day totally by myself. Still wasn't enough to teach me. Love the power of the 6.7 but I'm done. If the 23's hit the lot's this year and I can find a good deal I'm going to 7.3. I built a 2023 XLT with options I needed. Came to $59k with shipping. My 2019 was $73k being Lariet etc. Hopefully dropping down a trim line with less options will help financially. It'll be Good enough to haul my 855S Truck Camper and tow my 15 ft ultility trailer sometimes.

Anytime...
I've only filled from jugs with the Motorcraft nozzle. Staying away from pump DEF may prevent me from accidentally pumping DEF into the fuel tank. Plus I won't overfill the DEF tank at the pump spilling that corrosive schitt on my paint...
But that's just me. YMMV...
Or as a possible option, fill up the 2.5 gallon jugs at the pump and fill up from them... Just a thought.

Here's a thought, the def pump is skinny, so if it has a LOT of slop in the hole, don't pull the trigger! If it don't fit, you must quit! The nozzles for the pump and containers are snug fits to the DEF tank so, that should be the first thing you check before letting it pour.
