I have been running the afe big boost oiled filter, but at the price of the service kits this is interesting. Wondering if anybody has personal experience with this filter
Washable dry or oiled filters in our truck cause issues as they will eventually cause dusting, regardless of how well they are maintained or the original quality, they just do not work well.
If you want a 6637 or like filter you would be better off just getting a Donaldson or even the Donaldson Blue.
In most cases the factory filtration system is more than adequate. I will say I have the Donaldson Blue and it has been very good to the truck. The 6637 way more than the 7.3 will ever need but fits and works very well when properly installed and maintained. I went the 6637 route because of a bad air box.
Bit of a ramble, but you would be better off getting a quality throw away. Depending on how much you drive and where with conditions your milage will vary. I change mine out about yearly or 1 1/2 years for only about $40, not bad for a longer life filter. Disclaimer as I have not looked lately at the price but I still have one on the shelf.

the whole reason I went to the oiled from a regular throw away 6637 was when I bought my turbo kc recommended the afe big boost said something about a regular doesn’t flow enough air. I clean and oil the filter every other oil change(10k) I drive a lot about 50k miles a year. Just looking at options.
Do you have more mods than just the turbo? A 6637 or AIS flows great for stockish power levels, but can't keep up with big injectors or whatever.
yeah I have a whole list of mods truck is supposedly 500+ hp. 200/200 injectors, kc stage 2 turbo, dual Bosch 44 fuel
pumps, upgraded fuel
lines, cnc fab 4 corner feed, cnc fab stage 2 hpop, upgraded southbend clutch, hydra with swamps tunes, I’m sure I missed something but that’s the just of the truck, it’s a late 99
Ran that filter this past fall on a 6.7 powerstroke. It sucked so much dust through it that I had to get a refund after only 600 miles. Was absolutely disgusted with how it performed. It might be ok if you NEVER leave pavement. After my experience I will never run anything besides a paper filter. I don't know where KC gets off claiming the 6637 is so terrible, at least it actually filters the air.

I think they said something about sucking it shut like a crunched can, don’t really remember for sure. Well that’s all I need to know about that air filter thanks

If you can find the 6637 variation with the steel cage on the inside those are the best since they can't collapse. As many years as the 6637 has been in use it has a good track record.
So Ik everyone says the dry is better, but a properly maintained and oiled filter is there really an issue, Ik dirt bikes i have had in the past have always had oiled filters used in high dust environments without problems, what maintenance is key?

IIRC, KC has watched the intake boot suck shut on the dyno with a 6637. I assume this is the standard version and not the Donaldson Blue but that is complete speculation on my part.

Had it happen to me as well, intake boot can get soft over time.
I have never tried the AFE filter and after 10's of thousands of miles on all on and off road surfaces with the Donaldson Blue 6637 and a prefilter cover, I never will. As Brokestroke mentioned, there are a few different versions of the 6637 style filters. Some have the steel cage inside and some do not.
I have seen the AFE filter being recommended in the past as a more free flowing filter, but I am no engineer and will take their word on it. For my application though, there is no risk of outrunning the capability of the Donaldson Blue. Though I do see peak boost PSI near 40 at times, it is usually 15 - 25 PSI with stock injectors.
As for the OEM intake boot collapsing under stress that may be twice what it was designed for, I am not surprised. In those cases, perhaps a better intake system with more rigidity should be utilized.
I commend you for searching for a suitable replacement and hope toy find something that is budget friendly, but also fits your application very well. Keep us updated.
I've been using the dry S&B filter for a while now. Don't have any complaints. I do have the pre-filter cover on it just for extra protection. Seems to filter well. Definitely catches a lot of dirt and dust.
I'm guessing KC recommends the Big Boost filter because it really does flow the best and most of their customers have modified trucks that needs the air. I might try one next time it's due if I start running big miles on the road again. Could be some economy and performance there even with a lightly modified or stock truck. For trucks that see dusty roads daily I would stick with a paper Donaldson. So it's kind of up to the owner and how they use the truck.
