I've got a 1966 F100 with a later 400M engine, Eldobrock 1404 carb, and auto transmission. Having trouble getting carburetor adjusted to a smooth idle AND, when put in gear, idles drops substantially and/or stalls. Vehicle was a barn find, engine appears to be new/rebuilt (pulled valve covers and absolutely no sludge or oil film on anything inside).
Actions to date:
New distributor, points condenser, cap, rotor
Timing set
Carb cleaned (twice) and rebuilt (with kit)
New Fuel filter
New fuel tank
Flushed fuel lines.
Carb doesn't seem to want t o adjust to allow smooth idle. Can get idle adjustment screws to make it run rough (Both lean and rich directions), but won't smooth out much in between.
Have to adjust idle high to keep from stalling out in gear.
What else can I look at/do?
The edelbrock can't take much fuel pressure 5 to 5 1/2lbs is about all it can handle, many stock pumps will put out more than that and the edelbrock will dribble the fuel in past the secondaries causing a foul idle. The easy way to tell is to look into the 'wells' on either side of the secondary venturiis, this is the well for the counterwieights on the gate valve for the secondaries, reach in and open it up and you'll be able too look down into the well, if you see raw fuel, dried fuel residue or just goo in the bottom you have too much fuel pressure. very common problem with the edelbrock.
