Flatty Generator Output

Have a weird issue with my generator on my 50 F-47 (F1). The guy who rebuilt the engine also went through the generator and gave it a clean bill of health. Issue is that 99% of the time I'm getting battery voltage whether it's at idle or driving around. It will randomly spike to around 8.5-9 and once I return to idle it will not increase with RPM like it should. If I manually polarize the generator off the regulator leads it will charge normally and then drop out after 5 minutes of running. Wondering where I should start?

Thanks

As with all things electrical on old iron, start with the grounds. Run a new ground wire to the generator and see if it helps.

That's a fine looking beast.

Could it be a regulator issue? Maybe swap another in to see if the problem persists.

Mine was doing odd things, and I replaced the brushes. Seemed to help, but you need to follow the seating procedure in the manual.

Oh thats a nice truck!
Yeah, good grounds are really important. So check them all for cleaniness and tighten them. Double check the ground wire connection between the voltage regulator mounting base and your generator.
Your cabs firewall and your frame should also be connected to where your battery grounds to and hopefully that is on your engine block. You should also have heavy gauge battery cables such as 2/0.
One mentioned one thing though I am curious about is how you polarized your generator with the wires at your voltage regulator. If that was not done correctly your voltage regulator could of been damaged and the contact points inside of it are no longer making good contact. Normally on these Fords to polorize them you remove the battery and the field wires from the regulator to isolate the regulator out of circuit and just touch those wires together. You should get a small spark and then you are done.
Heres a handy diagram, use the one on the right.

Use the one for type B
