I am sure this has been asked dozens of times. So I’ll make it short. I have a spare 300 and dully sitting around. I am going to build that 300 into a 308 or 310 as a pull engine. I am wanting to put it infront of a 5 speed. I have seen people adapt ZF units behind it, as well as heard to use the car transmissions. (Idk if the car transmission would accept the bigger 300 flywheel or not) I do plan on putting 4.55 or so gears in the back and using an overdrive box on the back of the transmission (it’s 2WD and I’m gonna leave it that way). I’m asking for y’all’s advice on which way would be the strongest and easiest conversion?

No adapter needed for it to work behind a 300. My friend had an ‘88 F-150 4x4 with a 300 and ZF5. You will need to find one with the 300/302/351W bolt pattern. What car transmission are you looking to use?

I heard to use either a T5 or a M5OD. Which I’ve seen what a M5OD can handle and it’s out of the question for me. I like the T5 (buddy has one in his mustang) but am unsure with it being in a haul truck situation.
If you're planning on putting torque to it in pulling/towing applications, the T5 is not your huckleberry. It's a very good transmission, for what it is, but it is a car transmission. It worked alright in a Ranger, but they weigh a fair bit less than the F-Series, and aren't rated for much towing.
The ZF is going to be your good choice for something that will bolt right up, or go to a NP435, T18, or adapt an NV4500/NV5600. Use a truck transmission.
Ford never used the T5 in the ranger. Other than the first few years of Rangers getting various Japanese 4 and 5 speed light duty boxes, the rangers got the M5OD-R1, which is best described as a 7/8 scale model of the M5OD-R2 used in F-150/Bronco.
The M5OD is plenty strong for anything you're going to do with a naturally-aspirated 300, but lacks a deep enough 1st and R gear for big towing duties. However, as others have said, Ford already solved that problem by offering the ZF S5-42 transmission behind the 300 from the factory in F1/2/350 (same exact trans was used behind 302 and 351 V8 engines as well).
That said, the old 4 spds (T18 and NP435) have even deeper 1st and R ratios than the ZF even. If you're going to be running an add-on overdrive anyways, these might be an even better option for you.
I do plan on moderately building the 300. I’ll probably end up searching for a ZF unit cause I want to be able to double up overdrives. I actually have a NP435 in my 85 F-150 and I love it. I just never knew they made small block bellhousing units of the ZF

Excellent engine tech on the 300 over at Fordsix.com
Look for an S5-47 if you do ZF. Stronger case than the -42. A Gear Vendors is divorced on a 2x4 application behind a ZF also, unless you planned another brand of box.
