Hi everybody. I am new to this so bare with me please. I have a 79 f-150 with an inline 6 300 4 speed and i want to put a 302 motor in it but keep the 4 speed. Do i have to find a new flywheel or what do i need to convert this please?
Yes it is. Should i stay with the 300 or put a 302 that has been cammed and rebuilt? I am not sure but i work my truck alot pulling trailers and love how the 300 pulls.Just was not sure if the 302 would do any better?
I just cant stand how slow the 4.9 is. Is there any modifications that would make it run better? I love the way it pulls but it sounds like a foreign car and is slow. I have a transmission for a big block but have no engine.Do you think i would be better off with a 390 or something? Thanks for the replies.
Hhhhm. Convert to a 390, which did not come stock in this truck, so you will be mixing & matching to make it work--can be done. But, as my brother-in-law says, 'hear me out'.
Your truck nice? Run good? SELL IT.
Buy something with a 460 in it and tow with pride.
If you'd rather cut your mother's heart out with broken glass than part with this truck and MUST repower, consider:
A 302 conversion will gain you nothing, as you will be going about the same speed at higher rpms.
A 351w, maybe a good compromise. Which 4 speed do you have, granny low or OD? If granny, it will handle the 351w ok. 351ws didn't come in this truck either but it will be easier than the 390.
I have another 79 f-150 that had a 351m400 in it would that work? I had a 390 years ago and i loved the way it run.
OK, you posted that while I was droning on in the previous post.
Yes, that will work. The other truck--"had" a 351m-400?
First, which one, the 351m or the 400? Second, where are these motors now? Third, is this a "donor" truck, not usable as it sits? Either engine will be a power improvement over the six.
The bell/flywheel/clutch will have to be for this block, as it does not share the same pattern. (the 351w does share the bell pattern with the six)
These engines wake up real quick with the earlier "straight up" timing set vs. the retarded cam timing used in later models. After that is corrected, you can power them up as you like, up to firebreather if you want to unload cash into them.
Good luck with this. See the engine forums for info on the engines, lots of builds and sources there.
I never want to part with this truck its my baby. As for mixng and matching i love the challenge. I have the granny transmission. Its a really nice truck that i restored the body on myself i was just looking to upgrade the motor a little. Like i said before the 4.9 pulls like a bear but too slow for the highway.I get the 302 thing is thrown out the window. I dont want to lose power thats for sure.
Thanks alot for the input on turning the 4.9 up a little. The other truck is a donor truck and the motor was a 351 modified big block which is gone and so is the clutch and flywheel. So i only have the tranny transfer case and rears left. Will the 351 big block bell fit any big block ford?

Where are you located? I know where there is a 351W already in a 79 F150 that is for sale (the motor).
