1942 ford VIN

1942 ford VIN
Applying for a lost title. Provided CORRECT vin, BUT Ill. says the number is wrong because the ninth digit is a check digit and doesn't jive. Can't believe in 42 they had such a thing. My vin is (star) 18 6774363 (star). Maybe i shouldn't have sent them the 18. Any info appreciated. Thanx

Your serial number consists of everything inside the stars...including the 18. My only suggestion is to check the numbers again and look closely for light stamping that may cause the numbers to be misread. It's not uncommon to find some numbers lightly stamped. Many times an 8 can appear as a 3, or a 9 as a 7, for example. Good luck!

There is no such thing as a check digit on these serial numbers. The number you are giving them is the correct serial number.
You might want to check with some of the old car clubs in your area, see if you can find an early Ford V8 chapter and talk to them. They might be able to direct you to somebody or a service that deals with registering old cars.
