I am going to install a set of Posie dual flex leaf springs on the front of my 54. They are a two leaf setup for lowering 2-3 inches. The rear of these springs mount conventionally. The front of the spring is a reversed eye design. I'm wondering about the effect on the axle mounting geometry (castor) due to the front reversed eye mount. I believe this configuration will cause the axle to "tilt" a bit further rearward which will (to some extent) defeat the purpose of the castor wedge. My existing axle uses a two degree stock wedge. I'm considering a four degree wedge to counter this. Midfifty has these.
I spoke with a rep at Posies before getting these springs. They said just use the stock wedge.
Any thoughts or advice?
I would install the springs and axle with NO shims. Then take it to get aligned. Once you get the results you'll know exactly what shims, if any, you'll need. When I had my Alignment shop we would cold bend straight and I beam axles for both Camber and Caster all the time. I haven't had any luck finding someone that bends axles around me lately.
I recently purchased Posie springs from Speedway. They work great but some notes. They didn’t have the shortened u-bolts so they sent the long bolt kit. The threads on two of the bolts didn’t go up high enough, so washers were required. This will be worse if you end up not needing the shims.
The new shackle pins I also bought had an issue. The hole in the pins for the cotter pin were at the very end of the threaded section on two of them. It took some creative bending to make them interface with the castle nut.
Last, on my 51 F1, the existing pins that went into the shackles were pressed into the outer front shackles. Had to heat them up to remove (after removing from the frame).
The Posie springs are a definite improvement.
Thank you for your replies. BJ that makes sense, I could provide the shims to the shop when it is there. I also doubt there is any shop in my area that is equipped to bend a straight axle.
Dturk, I bought a front axle with the Posies attached from a guy who bought another guy's unfinished build. He is installing a Crown Vic IFS. I had removed the springs for the drive home. The springs have the short Ubolts. Haven't installed them yet but my existing stock shackles have new bolts that I'm hoping to reuse. Glad to hear you are satisfied with them.
