2005 F-250 6.0 Crank, No Start

Hey y’all - new here but have gotten a ton of info from these forums over the years. Hopeful y’all can help me out.

I’ve got an 05 F-250 with the 6.0, approx 201k on it. I just purchased the truck about 6 months ago and it was running pretty well. Cold starts were slightly troublesome when the temps got below 50 but nothing too bad. The motor didn’t appear to have had a whole lot of work done to it so I decided to be a little proactive and do head gaskets, studs, oil cooler, and EGR cooler. Here’s the low down on what’s happened: Replaced Head Gaskets, EGR Cooler, Oil Cooler, Installed Head Studs

Crank, No start after re-assembly

Checked IPR filter screen, not very dirty

Found Cam Sensor Connector corroded, replaced connector

Started - injector knock, cylinder 1 underperform, significant white smoke

Replaced fuel injector in cylinder 1

Same results, injector knock, cylinder 1 underperform, significant white smoke

Installed new injector wiring harness and new FICM power board (Dorman)

Crank, No start

Reinstalled original FICM power board

Crank, No start

Load tested batteries, found bad. Replaced both with new Interstate Battery - Group 65, 850cca

Crank, No start

Replaced FICM relay

Crank, No start

FICM Main Power, 48-48.5VDC; FICM Logic Power, 12VDC; ICP during crank, 2000+ psi; IPR at crank, 84.7 - decreasing as ICP rises

Crank, no start

Installed new remanufactured FICM

Crank, No start, same values as above, no injector clatter at key on

Reinstalled original FICM

Crank, No start, same values as above, does have injector clatter at key on

Crank began to weaken, put batteries on charger, but charger wasn’t charging.

Took batteries and alternator to be tested, both clean.

Reinstalled batteries and alternator

Starter click only.

Replaced starter, put batteries on charger and charged appropriately

Crank, No start.

Check voltage at injector plug, 48VDC pulses

Crank, No start

FICM Logic Power: 12.4; FICM Main Power: 48.5; ICP: 2000+ psi after cranking for a few seconds; IPR: 14.7 pre crank, 84.7 at initial crank, decreasing to 47 during crank; FICM sync: 1; Slight smoke out tailpipe after cranking for a bit.

Crank, No start

Replaced both fuel filters

Crank, No start

No codes stored or pending

I’m open to any suggestions at this point. It’ll fire off with some ether but doesn’t stay running. Thanks!

You should really move this over to the 6.0 forum as it’ll get more traffic. They will need some basic information that can be attained by a FORScan or equivalent diagnostic reader and software. Need to determine pressures, FICM sync, fuel pressure, etc.

yep, looks like you already got some traffic. These guys know these motors inside and out. Good luck, see you at the 6.0 forum.

Have you scanned for codes during all this cranking? Does SYNC and FICM SYNC read yes when cranking? Have you checked fuel pressure?

Hey Evan,

yeah I get sync and FICM sync during crank. Haven’t scanned for codes while cranking, but will once I get my cable in for ForScan. Just using a scangauge2 right now.

I’ve check fuel pressure at the bowl on top but just by letting it fill with the cap off. It’s fills pretty quickly.
