URGENT please

2016 F250, temps here -6* F, truck started fine drove to work fine, then message came on "DEF fluid low, limp mode will engage in 60 miles". I added a full bottle of Blue Def (2.5gal), but low def light is still on, is something simply frozen or am I in trouble?..........need to get home. Thanks

In my experience, if the DEF heater fails, it will trigger an Engine light and a code telling you the fault. There is a warranty program for this issue for certain years. My 2012 was repaired under it. It has been said that after you fill the DEF Fluid up, it takes a little time for the truck to recognized it. I always wait and fill after the 500 mile count down as constantly topping it off can cause issue with what level the DEF is at

Tank and line have heating elements that can fail and put the truck into limp mode.

UPDATE: according to the owner of the truck in question.......he added a bottle of FRAM brand DEF, light went off, no limp mode and truck is running fine. So I'm not sure if it was the brand of DEF, or adding more to the tank so the sensor got a true reading or what it was, but sure was a wild ride. Thanks to everyone that helped, much appreciated.

It could have been just not enough fluid added the first time, or maybe even not enough time for it to cycle through to get the light to clear. Either way, it sounds like it is resolved, and that's good.

If you run it to that low you will have to completely fill it to get the alarm to clear I've had the low level fail to clear after running low to 60 mile limp timer and had to fill it all the way to clear the issue.

When its that cold, I've always warmed up my bottles of DEF on the passenger side floorboard with heat on high..You might hear some strange noises as you pour it in, But it works, also while idling the DEF heater (POS) should be working. Glad to be out of the oilfields in ND and WY and back in Texas.
