Does anyone know how to remove and replace the cruise and hvac/radio control buttons on the steering wheel? Mine are badly faded and worn. I found a set of decent ones, but it’s not clear how to remove them. It doesn’t look like removing the airbag gives any additional access, and gently prying at them hasn’t worked.
The airbag module has to come off, there are pigtail connectors under there, the button and switch assy is firmly pressed into its vinyl or leather opening. You may be able to remove the pivoting buttons by using a micro flat-blade screwdriver and gently pry between the button and body where the pivot nipple is. I think I did this to mine to clean them.
Prying them out with plastic trim removal tools worked eventually. The tangs on them were getting caught on the leather, so it took a bit of back and forth to get them out.
I did have to remove the airbag and cut a few zip ties to free up the pigtails so I could plug them in to the new switches.
