Turning over motor by hand, hardly any liquid

Ok so you guys are probably gonna tell me I’m overthinking this but keep in mind I’m new to working on any vehicles and I do not want to be the dummy that hydro locks his motor.

Doing an injector and glow plug replacement. Pulled the two small side oil rail plugs on each side but not the end ones that actually drain it down the side of the motor. Got the old injectors out and cleaned the cups and used a hand powered mitty pump and stuck the hose down through the bottom of the injector cup and sucked up what I could. Put the new injectors in, left glow plugs out, put back on valve covers and used a 15/16” ratchet to turn the motor over a bunch of times.

The thing is, when you watch videos of people doing this online they always say “make sure you put the valve covers on or you’ll have oil all over your shop” they make it sound like this thing is gonna be blasting oil out of the glow plug holes like high pressure garden hose. However when I did mine I couldn’t hear any liquid moving at all. Motor turned freely and easily I didn’t have to use much pressure. Took the valve covers off and they don’t even have splatter on them. Looks like a little bit of extra liquid maybe pooled at the bottom below the injector cavities but even that’s hard to tell.

When I was using the hand pump I got a bunch of liquid out of the passenger side but about a quarter as much out of the drivers side due to the hose not being able to go down as far. I dunno I guess I just kinda expected more liquid to come out.

Am I good to go?

Both valve covers off? Pull all 8 glow plugs, unhook the 42 pin, crank the engine 5 times for 20 seconds. Put charger on batteries. Replace glow plugs, reconnect 42 pin. Cycle the key to run 3 times waiting for the fuel pump to shut off each time

Leave valve covers off, try and fire it up. Once idling watch oil spigots on all injectors for oil. Keep fingers away from moving parts

Well i would do it that way but it won’t actually crank at the moment through the starter I was just trying to get everything buttoned up already for when it will. I had read you can just do it by hand like I did so that’s what I was trying to confirm.

You did it right. If you turned it over at least 2 times (I do 4 just to be safe) it will have purged enough that its safe to follow Wes's instructions.

You don't have to try and start it right away after the cranking procedure, just do it sometime before reinstalling the glow plugs. It will reduce the amount of cranking needed to start it once your ready.
