Basically what I read is Mobil is pretty much calling normal diesel something else and advertising it as somewhat special
I was a Mobil station filling up last week and I had to stare at the pump a lot longer than I normally do. They had '#2 diesel' and another pump just labeled 'diesel'. There was a pretty good price gap between the 2 also, like $0.50/gallon. I had to do a triple take to make sure I wasn't going to put off road diesel in my tank, I couldn't figure out what the difference was between the handles other than the price. Both were on road diesel, maybe one had more bio in it. Who knows, but the truck ran through the tank just fine with the no. 2.

not sure where you’re located geographically, No. 2 is your standard diesel fuel, most common, usually #1 or a mix of it is sold in some northern states and maybe elsewhere and is typically more expensive, I’m guessing that is what the pump you saw was supposed to be labeled.
The cheaper diesel is biodiesel. I get lousy fuel millage from french fry oil. I believe off highway diesel wil be marked clearly. I never use #1 grade diesel Truckers all use #2.

That's what I'm thinking, the higher cost pump was No. 1. This was in Vermont. It scared me a little bit though because the pump labeled No. 2 was much cheaper than what I was used to seeing, and the higher priced pump was where I expected fuel to be priced. Just weird that the higher priced pump was just labeled 'diesel'

The off road stuff is, fortunately, usually pretty well labeled. Almost screwed up once, diesel pumps were off to the side. 2 high speed nozzles and 1 regular nozzle but the regular one was off road. The cheaper pump I filled up at in VT wasn't labeled as bio. I would think they'd have to put some signs or something up, right? It was just labeled No. 2, I haven't see bio diesel at the pumps around me, at least not labeled.
Seems interesting and unfortunately asking a station employee is most likely a futile endeavor. Bio blends up to 5% don’t have to be labeled per federal law, some states may have different rules and regulations. Even if a person did use dyed on accident, it’s far from the end of the world, most of the dyed sold at the pumps still has the state tax added on, just not the federal tax, so you’re still paying to fix roads and crap. If you go inside and have verification it’s for a farm they will sometimes deduct the state tax too which puts it considerably lower depending on state fuel taxes.
our quick trip and exxxon stations here are at least b10 bio.
the others range from b5 to b20
quick trip price toady jumped from 2.79 to 2.99 a gallon, its been hovering between 2.77 and 3.00 the last few weeks
i have not seen any other stations with just plain diesel , everyone has some bio in it for lubricity.
i don't patron loves or TA stops as they are mucho higher in price than the other stations

the bio isn’t in the fuel for lubricity, but it is a welcome side affect, bio is becoming like ethanol, some percentage is starting to be mandated everywhere

So far we mostly have regular diesel but like stated before 5% bio doesn't need any markings. I have found B20 in some areas of Ca. I stay away from it as much as possible. Very attractive when diesel here $4.35 a gallon and B20 in 3 something.
back in the day i ran 100% bio in the 7.3. all summer, then ran 50/50 in winter of peanut oil or filtered waste cooking oil with fuel. zero issues. had a great hook up at a restaurant. now days they wont give it away as they get paid to let the oil retrievers get it
