Carb help

I have an 87 Bronco with a 351 4bbl. I am pretty sure it is not the original carb. The engine is not running right at higher rpm's. When I rev it in the driveway it is fine, but under a load is sounds like it is sputtering and looses a little power. The carb looks a little dirty inside and may need a rebuild, i am not sure. It also smells like is it running rich, and gets maybe 4-5 mpg. I am trying to figure out exactly what holley carb is on it. There are 2 numbers stamped on the air horn B(or maybe an 8, can't tell)0437-2. and below that 2369. Also on the top of the carb, near the ridge that holds the aircleaner in place is GR7809. I have the hayes holley carb manual, and none of these models are in there. Any help on identifying it so I can get a book on it, or help on adjusting it would be greatly appreciated. Also, this is not my daily driver, I just take it out on nice days to have fun with.

Are you sure it is the carb. Check your plug wires and plugs to make sure they are ok as well as a general tune up. Given it is higher rpm specific, I would look at the timing. You should have a distributor with a vaccum advance If I remember correctly. It is possible that the diaphragm inside has gone bad, the mechanism inside is sticking, or a vacuum leak to the distributor is leaking.

The wires and plugs are good. I looked at the vaccum advance part of the dist, and I tried to move it by hand and it was sticking, so I sprayed some teflon lube where it rotates and that freed it up really well, but it still ran the same. I was thinking it could be the diaphram part too, does and auto parts store stock that?

Distributor advance vacuum diaphram.....should be a stock item for most parts suppliers.

I just retarded the timing a little and it helped the problem. its running much better now. Of couse I have more problems now, I was out driving with the top off since it is so nice out, and on my way back home i heard some bad noises comming from the driver side rear wheel. It sounded like metal on metal klunking type noise comming from the brake. I just checked the pad yesterday and they are good, so I guess I will have to pull it apart again and see what happend. However, I still would like to rebuild the carb since it is very dirty, so if anyone can tell me exactly what model carb I have from the numbers i posted in my first post that would be great, thanks.
