MPG going down during regen cycle

Question about MPG drop during Diesel filter cleaning. Getting 19 MPG driving down the road then get message Diesel Filter cleaning and within 4 miles it drops from 19mpg to 15.9mpg. Next day driving and it has gone back up to 17.2.

Is this normal?

Yes it is Bruce. When the truck is doing a regeneration, the ECM injects extra fuel on the exhaust stroke so the fuel can get the exhaust temps up high in the DPF so the soot starts to burn off. That's why you see the mileage start to dip down as the truck uses extra fuel during the active regens.

is that why the delete improves the MPG because it is no longer doing that step so you don’t have that wasted fuel step?

Not claiming to be an expert here, but not all deletes gain mileage, if any. I do hear some claim to get more MPG, but many do not. Plus I think if someone has a power adder delete tune, and they get more generous with the skinny pedal, I don't really see any gaining more. But not saying you can't...

Maybe a stock power delete tune with an easy foot on the throttle would gain more MPG but just because you delete, doesn't mean you will. My 2 cents...
