02 F250 rear axle into an 05 Ex

Is there any reason why this wouldn't work? Other than matching gears...

I assume it's a direct bolt in but wanted to check here before I go for it.

Direct swap, you are good to go. Just be sure to use new U bolts as they are a one time use part.

You may find that the drive flanges are different between them, but you should be able to swap the current one over to the replacement, I had to do that with my '01 to '05 rear axle swap.
