We've had our Excursion since early 2004 and I can't even begin to describe how happy it makes me every time it accomplishes something that is jaw dropping. The 30,000 foot view so I won't bore everyone:
4 people, a dog, & 2 Christmas trees all inside.
Multiple cross-country and East coast trips with passengers, loaded with cargo, towing light and heavy including every combination of the former.
Hauling RR ties, pressure treated fence posts and pickets, other extremely heavy cargo.
A Queen size mattress will fit inside, you'll have to take out the spare to get the box spring in.
Last week, it made a spontaneous 400+ mile trip towing about 5,000 pounds. At 290,000 miles, I felt like I had to say "Thank You" so I did, then vacuumed out the interior.
It hauls nearly anything that'll fit in a long bed pickup. It will pull anything it's hooked to. I've dragged everything from tree stumps to a 10,500 lb camper. Throw the back seat in and haul 6-7 kids all the places they think they need to be. We have a side gig selling furniture and this is the workhorse of that show. It is the most useful vehicle I've ever owned. The only time it makes me cry a little is at the gas pump but I didn't buy it to be economical.
This is one of the lightest loads I've pulled with it: 1,000 pounds and change of a new Titan 6600lb scissor lift for the workshop. The poor truck got to do all the work but won't ever get to ride on it!
Late last year I put down the seats and loaded a little over a ton of ceramic tile in the back. That was a bit much for it - the steering was pretty light, not gonna lie.
I had three requirements when I bought the Excursion. I needed to haul 8 people (me, my wife, my daughter, son in law, and four grandchildren. I needed a 4x4, and I needed to tow my BBQ food trailer.
1. Hauls myself, my significant other, her parents, her friend, and both our 60 lb dogs, and everyone has enough leg room to stretch out decently, and still has room to fit a pile of gear, supplies or whatever in the very back.
2. Its the safest place to be on any road where it is driving, especially with the bumpers i have on mine.
3. It will bulldoze over or through anything that might get in the way of completing our task/mission/etc.
4. It tows my 30 ft trailer like a tinker toy in case I need to move a lot of stuff, gear, etc, quickly.
5. It intimidates anything that isn't bigger than itself on the road, and that isn't much other than the truckers.
6. It easily converts from field vehicle into hotel room with just the removal of the rear seat, for instances when the trailer isn't with it.
7. It has a reliability and longevity level not usually seen outside the Diesel arenas(6.0 excluded)
8. It can drive 450-550 miles non-stop on a single tank of gas (depending on the truck), possibly more if it was a diesel.
I can tell that my wife has never packed for you guys. For a trip to the lake about 6 hours away my wife takes clothes for weeks, food and water for a week, about 1/3 of her kitchen, and more shoes than I ever knew she had. Everything behind the front row seats is stacked so high that the windshield mounted rear-view mirror is useless.
When my wife and I travel in the Ex, it becomes a coupe.
Family got invited for a weeklong houseboat trip on Lake Powell, which is 1360 miles from us. Wife and I, 3 kids and a girlfriend, a ton of food, luggage, water, etc etc plus of course a 5,000 lb boat so we can run around on side trips while on the lake. My 2011 F150 crew cab wasn't up to the job (neither as reliable or as much room), so I went Excursion shopping. Found a very good condition '02 XLT 4wd with the 7.3psd with 199k for $14,500. Did nothing except fluid changes and hit the road - ran perfectly and got about 13mpg. I've taken it on a few other trips with the boat, and have a trip coming up where I'm renting a big bumper hitch camper for a family reunion. Ditched the F150 and got an '07 Tacoma 4wd 5 speed with the 2.7L 4 cylinder engine for everyday driving. Love the combo of the two but I especially love my Excursion!
