Any recommendations on the weight/brand of oil I should use on the X. It's a 2000 V-10 with 100K. I've always run Valvoline in my Land Rovers and VWs. We live in Colorado where the winter temps range from -30 to +60.
Thanks,
Todd

I have a 2003 5.4L Excursion and I live in Florida, Ford recomends using 5w-20. I have always used in my 2 other Fords and my Suburban 10w-40 Castrol it gets a little warm down here. Pete
Actually for the 2000 model Ford recommends 5W-30.
When the 5W-20 specs came out Ford said that it was okay to use in their older V10s but did not change it as a requirement. They only recommended it as a means to save fuel consumption. Which it doesn't to any noticable degree.
Although, the Ford 5W-20 available at WalMart is pretty good stuff!
You may use what you like, actually. You paid for the truck!
It gets hot here in Hawaii, too. Plus, I have lots of mountains to climb. I use 5W-20 in my Expy and 5W-30 in my Excursion. I do this because I know that the weight is NOT what protects. It is the additives in the oil.
Use a good quality oil of the correct (specified) weight, change it often and don't think too much into it. The aftformentioned list is the key to longevity in an engine.
One key to long engine life is initial startup protection! This is where the 5W is better than a heavier weight. Since the Motorcraft recommended 5W20 is semi-synthetic, as Monsta said, it is all about the additives that aid in protection. I was shocked when I first got my X and it stated I needed 5W20. I have read a lot in order to research this weight of oil, and was one from the old school of 10W40 is the best. But, what do I know about new technology? Seems that Ford is very strong about the new 5W20 weight oil. So, I am following the manufacturer's recommendation in the manual since I have a 100,000 mile warranty. By the end of that test, I will know better...right? So far, I have not heard of any negatives on this oil!
Now, I just got my daughter a new Focus, and guess what!!!?? It also takes only 5W20! Now we can share the case of oil!
The price is good for the Motorcraft oil at Walmart, and they have the Motorcraft filters as well, so that is where my head is parked right now!

I just got a email from Castrol and they said 5W-20 was there oil of choice for my Truck. They used the straw idea, thick oil is hard to suck up a straw, with the tight tollerances on engines today a thin oil works better for the start ups. I got the 100K so we shall see. Pete
