Now that the wiring is complete I figured it was time to fire it up after the long winter’s nap. Cranked fine but didn’t fire up.
Checked for voltage at the coil, 6.4V
Put the timing light on the coil wire....nuffin. Well not nothing, a quick flash then nothing.
Checked the points, making and breaking contact fine, voltage on the points.
I have a spare coil so why not try that? No change, still no timing light response.
I have a spare condenser, tried that, no change.
finally, an hour into this I pulled a plug wire, put it by the head and cranked it, what the h, spark.
check several other cylinders, yep spark.
Moving on...checked the carb, no fuel. Checked the tank (gauge isn’t connected yet) yep empty. Put in a few gallons, poured a little down the carb, fired right up.
Grrrr....what a rathole.
Oh...and I heard a strange noise, rhythmic. Took me a minute to figure out that the wiper motor was on, so my repair was successful.
In the airplane business they call that Pilot error, good thing you where still on the ground. We have all done the same kind of thing.
I had a very wise guy tell me that if you don't tell, ... nobody knows.
(OK EBEAR?)
He who makes no mistakes never does anything. You should see how much I can screw up. I so smrat that I can make the same mitsake 3, 4 and even 5 times.

For years (before kids) I flew RC model airplanes. There’s only one cause for a crash...pilot error. Since the pilot is also the builder and preflight inspector, there’s no one else to blame.
FYI, an 8 Lb airplane traveling across a field at 120 MPH (yes, actual speed) at 200 ft hits the ground really fast.
Laughing with you not at you. Easy to like people who tell stories on themselves. Makes us all feel better, knowing others have days like we have all had.
Hey Bob, glad you figured it out Welcome to our world. After I built the truck, I was taking my wife out for a real maiden type ride. Gas gauge was about at 3/4. All of a sudden, it quit Gas gauge was at 1/2 So I go checking this, checking that, etc. Turns out with the new tank and new gas gauge sending unit, they were not properly matched to the tank size. Plain and simple, was out of gas. Duh, I felt like a moron. So, yes we have all been there one way or the other
Seems simple but in the military the First thing to check with a no start? Check for fuel! Glad you got it figured out. I think we’ve all chased a rabbit or two with these ole trucks.
Some how I missed the wiper repair. Where can I read about it?
I did something very similar with a 100% re wire of my truck. The Fuel gauge was stuck on empty and I immediately jumped into troubleshooting. I checked the wiring, replaced terminals, pulled the cluster to check the connections, even pulled the sending unit out to make sure the float was good and that was when it dawned on me. I couldn't remember the last time I put gas in it, the tank was almost empty. Stopped by the gas station and all was well.
My truck/engine didn't run and stayed parked on the street for 6 months and I spent $150 to have an expert rebuild the carb(he did do a great job though...), then still had the issue that was keeping my truck from running, so I payed shipping to ship it back to him and have him test it again....he said it was fine. I went through the timing and vacuum settings a thousand times.
The issue?
I didn't set my idle screw on the carb.
That truck sat for 6 extra months and I spend probably 100 hours working on this and that, couple hundred dollars.....because I didn't turn a screw.

Last night I found that the fuel shutoff petcock was dripping very slowly, a drop every minute or so. I tightened it, but my guess is the 1/2 gallon or so I’d left in the tank simply dripped out over the winter.
EDIT...
Nope, wasn’t the petcock. The line I bought from inline tube isn’t sealing to the petcock. I don’t think the flare is correct.
