1956 door handle and window cranks frozen

I’ve used pb lube wd-40, pliers , I have not used heat yet and maybe that’s the fix but my drivers side door handles and window cranks are corroded or fused together and I cannot get them off. Yes I’ve removed the set screw but still will not come off. Aside from heat and the possibility of trying to cut them off I’m stuck. Trying to fix the wing window lock but need to get door handles off to get the door panel off. Any Ideas?

Perhaps the '56 are different. On my '53 they are held on with clips. And a PITA to remove.

Yes some handles ive seen use a clip like 70's GM cars, but mine on my '56 use a set screw. I do not know which are correct.

Door handles, window crank

I’ve searched and only the set screw that I can see and I was able to get the passenger side off with just removing a set screw.

Yes 56 uses set screws, 53-55 clips. I had a handle that was really screwed up and I couldn't get off. It was junk anyway so I used a cut off air tool and kept cutting off a little at a time until I got down to the shaft. I was trying to save the regulator. You can buy new handles though they are pretty chinsy, you also can buy new shafts if you have to ruin that. Good luck!

I would try a heat gun first before cutting it off , heat can work wonders .

Seaves46,

Well started in on them after work and I cut and cut and drilled until almost no handle left, that’s when they finally let go of the shaft. Now realizing all the work to do to get the new shafts back in there. Problem being full time classic truck owner and a summer time mechanic. Seems really simple at the beginning but then you start wrenching and find out the whole doors shot. I now would have been fine with the broken wing window handle.

Door handle orientation

So for an expert out there need help in finding out before I put my handles back on and finish it up. My present interior door handle faces down and to open the door I push forward to lock it I pull back don’t know why but this seems backwards or just awkward. I can reorient the handle to the up position and it works they way it feels right so the question is can I switch the passenger door locks etc to the drivers so that the handle will still be facing down or are they both the same and the only fix is to angle the handles up?

The door handles should point to the division bar. So the driver's door handle should point to between 1:00 and 2:00, the passenger side handle should point to between the 10 and the 11 relative to a clock.

Like this

The window handle should point the same way when closed.

With door handle at an angle like this your hand won't hit it when opening and closing the window.

Abe,

Thanks for the info. I had turned them like that when I changed them out figuring this was wrong because when I got the truck they faced down. So good pics and the way it should be.

Here is where I got the info about the door and window handle orientation.

I just gave up

Tried and it wasn’t worth the time or the effort. Upgrade the door and window shaft to the whole assembly. Time well saved and a bunch of headaches
