Won't start

1997 F250HD 460 gas auto. Couple of weeks ago had to have truck towed from gas station .... sounded and felt like a starter problem. When we got home it started right up.

After letting it sit a few weeks until yesterday ..... same problem as at the gas station, won't start. Fuel pump engages and a slight click, not the strong click like a solenoid or starter grunting.

When we short the two main lugs on the solenoid it will not engage the starter and nothing happens. Not even a spark between the two terminals! Is this a bad starter or bad solenoid.

Thanks for any advice in advance

Are you sure the battery is in good shape,,and also decently charged after sitting for a few weeks? Do your headlights come on bright? If so do they change brightness when you bridge the solenoid?

Yes sir. Battery holds a strong charge. Just performed another test on the solenoid. Jumped the positive side battery directly to the smaller lug on the solenoid and it did clunk, but I did not hear anything from the starter. Never had a solenoid not have spark or an arc or something when shorting the terminals, no matter what was wrong with the starter.

My money is on a bad cable/connection between the starter solenoid and starter. Also check the ground connection at the engine block. Inspect the terminals for signs of cable corrosion under the sheathing.

I'm going to check the wiring cables tomorrow. I have a spare starter from another motor of the same year and cid and will test it for functionality. Might decide to install that one. Where does the ground wire terminate at the block ? is there a threaded boss in front of the motor mount?

Of course nothing is going to be easy! When we tested the spare starter pulled from a different motor, the solenoid at the starter clunks but the starter itself doesn't work. Now that I'm thinking about it, the firewall solenoid seems to work but will not engage the starter mounted solenoid or the starter itself.

Question: when testing the firewall mounted solenoid and starter. If you short the two large lugs mounted on the solenoid the starter should engage, without the help of the starter mounted solenoid. Is this correct? UPDATE: This is NOT correct! Starter motor will not engage unless solenoid is activated.
