FRICTION MODIFIER ADVICE

FRICTION MODIFIER ADVICE

1977 Ford F-150, 4X4, NP 435 Transmission and NP 205 Transfer Case.

Have the NP 435 Transmission removed to replace input shaft seal. My son suggested that I add Ford's Friction Modifier when I re-fill the transmission. He said the friction modifier helps ease of shifting and extend synchros service life. My son is into Honda Acuras and doesn't have experience with our Fords. I use 80-90W gear oil in the NP 435 transmission.

Any experience adding Ford's friction modifier to the NP 435 transmission, be it advisable or not recommended?

If recommended, how many ounces should be used?

After releasing this, I'll be heading out running errands, then plan on working on the transmission, changing a weeping freeze plug that I discovered once passenger side header and starter got removed. Plan to come back on the forum this evening. Thanks all for your input on this.

I've never heard this before, and I don't see any need for it anyway. friction modifier is for posi rear axle clutch operation .

The only down side I can see is a possibility the modifier would reduce the syncro function in a transmission. I don't know that it would, but it could. this would certainly not improve shifting ease. besides that it isn't going to hurt anything.

The NP435 is a very good transmission and it really doesn't need anything more than a good quality oil. I run Lucas 75-90 in my transmissions but anything from 50w to traditional 80-90 works fine. NP435's don't have any brass in them so you don't need to worry about the GL-4 spec.

Appreciate your feedback which sounds reasonable. As I mentioned, I haven't read anything in our forum on this since I became a member and didn't find any threads or post on it with an advance search. Thanks again
