replace np205 transfer case

Wondering if anyone can give some direction on how to replace a np205 transfer case in my 1977 Ford f-150. I had a mechanic lined up to do it, but the project keeps getting pushed back. Figure I'll just do it myself.

Any help would be appreciated!

thanks

Also, what type of gear lube should be used in this transfer case?

that sucker is heavy. are you planning on rebuilding it or replacing it with one from a different truck? I think there is a tech article about building a jack base for it. Unless you are real strong on your back you are going to have to rest it on something. But I don't think that it would be a very complicated install. Just unbolt the drive shafts and then unbolt the t-case and slap the new one in there. as for the oil, don't know
Good luck
Nick

I'd use ATF fluid-I think some people use 80W gear oil though.

2 people can replace it. There is the driveshafts, shifter, frame mount and 6 housing bolts. Pretty easy. According to my ford book, it takes 20W50. That is what I use.

It is a pretty easy job to do. Just use a floor jack with a plate to support the t-case. It is very heavy for 1 person! Unbolt the shifter, drive shaft, and then unbolt it and it will come right out! Hope this helps! Have fun!
