Looking for guidance 1965 f1500 replacing engine with an 85 300ci What to look out for?
Hey guys, I have a 65 f100 with the 240, 1 barrel carb, 3 speed on the column. I've driven it around about a year and the day I finally had it "perfect" the motor locks up on me. I had to use power tools on the gas tank so I had drained the fuel, filled it with water, then drained the water (as much as I could) then topped off with gas. It was running really well but after I shut it off the motor was locked up solid. I've even had a truck pull it around with a chain and 1st gear just locks up the tires 2nd gear overcomes the clutch. Locked up tight unfortunately. I've had the spark plugs out spraying penetrating fluids in there, had a big breaker bar on the crank, nothing will turn this it's like the water washed away the oil, got it hot and it internally welded together. I'm shocked it did because it ran great so I figured there wasn't THAT much water running into the carb.
Silver lining is i'd like to step it up to a 300, can I convert a newer 300 to points and throw my one barrel on there assuming it's a 1 barrel intake I've heard about incompatible distributor gear materials and don't want to ruin anything. I also don't really want to put computers in my 65 points has been great to me so far.
Other than that it seems like they bolt up so is there anything I need to look out for or can i basically backdate the entire engine with my old parts? The new valve covers have all these hoses running around for vacuum can I just plug them and or switch to my old valve covers.
'85s were carb'd, so just swap the computer controlled carb out for your old carb.
Not sure on the distributor but I bet you'll know more if you pull both and do a side-by-side comparison.
'85s weren't roller or anything else much different than a '65 other than exterior controls. There are internal differences but that won't matter unless you are going to rebuild it.

Well I said 85 as an example but I haven't found the donor truck yet. I'm hoping to come across some "farm truck" or "lake truck" they call them basically a good running truck with no title that sells for $700. But haven't lucked into it yet so may be purchasing a $2000 truck just for the motor. I guess at that price I may be in crate engine or crate long block territory however I'll also get the EFI exhaust and other spare parts for when I break bolts etc. I can't imagine pulling my manifolds are going to go smoothly on my 65 so having back up parts may make up for the price.
Long story short I'm hoping someone can tell me more certainly on the distributor issue before I lay down the money.
I'm not sure on the dizzy yet, But I have a '93 300 being rebuilt right now that is going to replace my 240. I'm keeping it carbed and am planning on using a standard distributer.
