Well, after a lot of educating myself April/May of this year, I ended-up impulsively buying a loaded 2020 GMC 1500 AT4 for 18% below MSRP. Yeah, it's a fine truck but it's really not what I wanted. This particular dealer was willing to sell at good prices due to their bonuses beyond holdback for being the #1 volume dealer in the state. Who knows if it's true but it seems plausible. The sales guy simply explained that it's a pure volume game for them.
Is there a reliable source to indentify the highest volume Ford truck dealers in my state (CO)? If not volume, reputation perhaps? The dealer websites are almost as irritating as the actual dealerships with claims. I've seen "dealer rater" and other reviews of dealers but they are all loaded with 99% hyper-positive reviews. Again, who knows if they're legit reviews. So, I'd like to find the right dealer to work with like a professional and figured I'd try to find the highest volume in the state. I'm sure there are good guys working here and there and I know they all pay the same for the trucks so if higher volume gives them more room/willingness to get to the bottom line immediately, great.
My core question will be how much loss I'll endure by trading a 2020 GMC with 5K miles for a 2020 or 2021 F250. I woldn't even consider it, but I'd rather get what I should've bought in the first place as long as I can live with the loss. I just need some numbers and I can do the math.
Any insights are much appreciated (other then "don't buy a new truck if you're gona sell it in 6 months"...ha).
I have always had good luck with the Spradley dealers in the front range are or even up in Cheyenne... I can't remember the name of the dealer on I25 to the west of the highway as you come to Denver, but they have made some killer deals for me as well.
It's not a pretty picture, your going to lose the taxes paid, any dealer add on processing bs they charged, and approx 20% give or take a little, if it was a car you would be really screwed.
I'm sure there is a dealer that will find a way to bury the loss in the new truck, although keep in mind the new truck will be losing about the same, so if you lose 10k on the first one and then 10k on the new one thats a whole lot of cash.
Based on what you said, the dealer took 18% of msrp, that probably brought them down to the retail invoice price, they still make money selling at invoice.
If you want your best deal, which may in turn soak up a bunch of the loss, find a hungry new guy in the fleet department and buy the new one based on the fleet invoice, fleet invoice is anywhere from 12 to 20 percent less than the retail invoice.

Thanks, osris! If you're thinking West of I-25 around Dacono-ish, I think that's called Interstate Ford. I looked at a used rig there a cojple of years ago and they seemed pretty easy to deal with but it's always a crap-shoot to some extent.
Highest volume dealer near you is in Idaho, that is Mountain Home Auto Ranch. Good news is they have very competitive delivery rates. Even to California it was still a savings. I wasn't 18% but I was at 13% on my 2020 F250 lariat and that was great.

Its a bit further south close to 104th i think. Mike Naughton maybe?

Thanks Fatz, appreciate the input. I traded a very nice Range Rover that brought $40K in trade so my taxes were not as ugly as they could've been. Interesting point re Fleet invoice. I'll see what I can find-out. I'm planning on the sunk cost hit and I'd be OK with another $5K or so for making my bonehead move. Not that the GMC is junk, but it's simply not in the same league with the Ford product build-quality wise. I bought it for the 6.7L V8 and 10 speed plus some of the tech like HUD, on-board modem, etc. But the interior is just bugging me...just really sh**ty. It's VERY "car like" but that's not a factor for me. I thought I was buying at a really good price, thanks for popping my bubble there! haha
I definitely don't need the towing capacity of the diesel but payload matters for my use. Yeah, I probably don't even "need" the 3/4 ton rig for my 4-5x/year need to haul a 3,000-4.000lb hunk of manufacturing equipment 25-30 miles even though that exceeds the 1/2 ton payload capacity as advertised. I should've just stopped asking questions and got whatI know I "wanted" the first time. So, I'm in the penalty box now where the 'ol bank account is concerned.

Good to know! Thanks for the heads-up. With a trade and if I have to order to get what I want I'll need to give em a call. I go about this part of it with complete transparency on my side. If anybody wants to dork around playing games, then i just say goodbye. One strike rule. I prefer just getting someone on the phone and emailing everything I'm looking for and see what they can do.
There are soooooo many threads and articles and 'experts' out there around these transactions it's mind-numbing. Just like the gas vs diesel thing, you can speand weeks reading. I like to educate myself then just compare a few offers and be done with it. Tough for me to do if Ilet myself get into total analysis mode...ugh.
I bought mine from Autonation Littleton on Broadway near C-470. I went through the Internet Sales Manager. My discount was somewhere in the neighborhood of 9%. But that employee is no longer there.
Getting a hefty discount right now is going to be tough. With supply down and demand up, they don't need to deal.

Yeah, I'd think a dealer down there in what is now the nightmare area of Centennial/Lone Tree would be high volume as they feed the enormous number of Californians and Texans clogging-up the state for the past 10 years. Sorry, no offense if you're from there. I imagine you're right re discounts. I'm not looking for an incredile deal in my situaiton and since I own my 2020 GMC outright, it "feels" less painful...I hope. ha.

Colorado native here. But I did spend 13 years in Houston after college. I got back here as fast as I could.
Your best bet may be to buy using the Ford X-plan.

Nice, we CO natives are few and far between it seems (over 50 year old anyway). I lived in Austin for a few years as well...almost killed me. After spending more than 2 month's rent payments out around town in ONE night (don't ask) with a couple of our investors, I decided it was time to come home for sure. Was gone within three weeks.
