6r140 transmission trans fluid leak from bellhousing
Hey everyone, just looking for some insight as my search for information has come up fruitless. I have a 2011 that has developed a fluid leak coming from the bellhousing area. Its losing roughly a quart every three weeks or so and I'd like to pull it and fix whatever is wrong. We've rebuilt plenty of transmissions along the way, have my own shop and tools and what not but have been out of the business for a while. So ordinarily I'd say this is a classic front pump seal leak but my knowledge of the 6r140 is non existent aside from what I've researched online. Does this transmission use a usual seal upfront or is there something special about this one? Any and all tips, tricks and advice would be greatly appreciated.
My Dad's 14 had the same problem about two years from new.
it was the vent on top of the transmission that caused the front pump seal to leak.
He only towed heavy with this truck and in to the heat of the south.
So be sure you look at that while you have the transmission down.
I'm not 100 % sure but I think there were some changes in the vent tube design over the years.
I researched his problem here and came up empty too.
Good luck.
Hmm, interesting. Well I've ordered the seal and while I have it dropped I will definitely investigate the vent tube. I will do some more research to see the changes, and also try to learn why it was changed or even if it's just the location of where it sits that is different. Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it!
Thanks for the other reply too! I've scoured youtube on the 6r140, disassembly videos and all and they all skip on the front seal from what I've found. A few don't even mention vent tubes lol Google search comes up with nothing, and I have watched four disassembly videos now on it, but no mention of what exactly they use for a seal. But to be continued. I will order the seal from ford and ask them about it and also if there is a revised vent tube or what they know about it and will post back up when the operation is done and complete.
I haven't worked on an automatic in around 25+ years and back then that was C4 and C6's, that being said, leaky seals sometimes meant worn torque converter - front pump bushing or flywheel issues. Anyway something to check for, of course, is is likely just a bad seal. Just trying to help a fellow Ford owner.
Best luck.
