BOOM! WHOOSH! Not the boot...

On the way home last night towing about 14,000 pounds, I was noticing that my boost gauge was doing weird things. It would be at 0 then jump to 20 then drop to 0 then jump to 20 and bounce up and down like that a lot to different numbers, occasIonally bumping 40. I don’t know if the gauge is mechanical or electronic so, I’m not sure if this was an actual reading and there was a leak somewhere or what was going on but then about 50 miles from home, I got the BOOM, WHOOSH and no power of a blown turbo boot. I had the intercooler boot go about a year ago and replaced it with a metal and stronger rubber boot, an inspection this morning doesn’t look like that’s the issue this time. In the last 50 miles home, I would see a top boost of about 5 pounds and couldn’t get over 60MPH, it was dark so I don’t know whether or not I was blowing smoke but, I would bet that I was. It’s a 2014 with about 197k on it and the original turbo. I was going to go ahead and replace the turbo soon to be proactive since I figure the ceramic bearings have given me a good run, I might have waited too long though?

I’ve got 2 questions for you guys.

First, what’re else should I be looking for my WHOOSH?

Second, if I’m replacing the turbo, what’s a good drop in option? I’d like to reduce lag but, I don’t really need a lot more power. I definitely want to eliminate the ceramic bearings.

i appreciate your feedback.

have you checked the cold side intercooler pipe. They too have been known to fail since plastic.
That may be what you are already indicating as being replaced. I am unclear.

2015 andup turbo will fit but needs programing I think.

What codes do you get if you scan the pcm

There aren’t any codes, there seldom are...lol. My HPFP failed recently, wouldn’t make pressure because it wore out, not grenaded, and it never through a code either, it would just fall on its face under load.

I replaced the cold side. I haven’t really had a chance to look at it yet because I had to drive 3 hours round trip to get the coolant line, I think though that the hot side silicone boot has probably come off, I’ll look when it cools down some. I just got the coolant line put back together about 30 minutes ago.

I’d like a turbo option that doesn’t require a bunch of changes, something I can just drop in that spools up faster and doesn’t have the ceramic bearings. Like this is an option -

i just don’t know anything about this particular turbo or, if a better option exists. The price is expensive but, by the time you add all the parts needed to retrofit a 2015+ and the time required, it really ends up costing about that anyway.

I got my wife to give me a hand and found where the boost is leaking, it's coming from under here. I'm not sure what's down there, I guess I'll take it apart in the morning and find out.

intake leak of some kind. Maybe that plastic piece is failing/failed.

Check this out. 11 to 14 rebuilt turbo with standard ball bearings.

Well, I found the problem, upper intake failed. Is this common or am I just lucky?

I suspected that was the failure, not common and easy enough to replace.

Easy? This thing was a BEATCH to remove.

i think as long as I’ve got to do the work, I’ll improve the system and go back with all metal parts that flow better. https://www.pusherintakes.com/Pusher.../pfp1114is.htm

Of course, this kit doesn’t work with the stock turbo, it needs the 2015+ so, it makes the turbo choice a little easier.

You can get that kit, but not unless you have a tuner.

Truck underwent a weight loss program before I bought it so it’s already needed tunes. I’ve been running Tyrant tunes on it.

Probably the reason for the failure!

it only took a little over 100k miles for it to cause it...lol. Given that there are almost 200k miles on the original turbo with ceramic bearings, which is known to be a weak link, I highly doubt that the tuning is an issue. It clearly isn’t very aggressive or it would’ve blown up long ago,

Maybe the problem is that Ford cheaped out and used plastic where there should have been metal.

My '12 truck has 194k miles and I pull a camper, 22ft bay boat, utility trailer with tractor/shredder still with the factory tune, emissions equipment still intack and the engine hasn't been touched to date.

That is great on your truck.I suggest you get a upper intake boot(cold side) and throw in your tool box. They will crack over time and then here comes the WHOOSH and loss of power....yep happened to me.
I have this one now.Great set up.https://www.spediesel.com/products/s...cold-side-pipe
