Choked to death

I’ve got an issue with my 2013 F550 (cab and chassis). I just replaced the turbo as my previous one gave up the ghost. The truck won’t run with the exhaust hooked up. It starts, runs for a second, then acts like it’s being choked out and dies.
I spoke to a salesman with one of the
big aftermarket performance manufacturers. I was trying to buy the goods to delete this truck. Apparently that’s more than just a little frowned upon these days. He suggested I needed to use the FORScan program to force a regen or two. So after struggling through the technological aspect of the program (still not quite there) I can’t get the thing to regen, as it won’t run with the exhaust connected. I’m at a bit of a loss as to my next move.

so I come to you, oh wise FTE brain trust. What should my next move be?

Couple things come to mind, how'd you come to the conclusion/diagnosis that the turbo was bad? When it was replaced, did you use OEM parts or rebuild the original? Work done by reputable company or dealer? Was the truck running fine, now you have an issue after a turbo swap? I'm wondering if the connection of the exhaust is a symptom or the actual issue. If the truck ran fine, you swap the turbo and now it doesn't, I'd be double checking everything related to the turbo installation. Full disclosure, I'm not a diesel mechanic but if I 'fix' something and it all of the sudden seems to get worse, I can usually find the problem somewhere in the issue I just 'fixed'.

I totally track with you and follow that same logic.
i did the work myself. I replaced the factory turbo with a brand new factory turbo. The old one was trash. The shaft moved about 2 inches in whichever direction you like. This “plugged up” issue only happened as I was limping the truck home. The turbo developed enough of a mechanical noise (where it was just a “turbo leak” sound before) that I knew I was on borrowed time. So I drove it gently home. It made it about 20 miles of the 25 mile trip then gently coughed out and died as I exited the highway. I was able to disconnect the downpipe and get it to fire up once I got it home. That’s when I decided the turbo was for sure shot. Ordered a new one and got it in. Here we sit.

Oh and I guess I didn’t state this as clearly as I thought I did originally. It currently purrs like a kitten with the exhaust disconnected. No signs of any issue at all until I hook the exhaust up.

Nothing is going to fix it. Either send the unit out for a bake and clean or replace the DPF with a new unit. If the unit is melted or broken internally replacement is your only option.

Does it sound like a totally plugged dpf to you, then? I’m not stoked about it, but it is what it is. I just hate to spend 2 grand on one then find out that wasn’t it. Or not buy enough parts. Does it sound like any of the other emissions systems be trashed as well?

If the old turbo was a bad as you say, a bunch of oil leaking through the bearing seals probably coked up the DPF to where it has no flow. Not sure if the people that reman them could even clean it. Most likely the converter is also coked up if the DPF is. The SCR portion is really just a DEF spray bar into a can, so that might be ok. I would try to find a used exhaust on Ebay before I spent a ton on a new one.

Check out an online Ford parts dealer like villagefordparts.com

It might be cheaper.

I use autonation white bear lake (formerly Tousley ford) for parts. Pretty good pricing.

Just out of curiosity. what codes do you get if you scan it?

P02EO: Cylinder 3 injector range circuit performance
P02E9: intake air flow sensor high
P00BD: mass air flow circuit a high
P246C: DPF restricted
P1247: turbo boost pressure low
P2073: Mass air flow

So let me ask, what are you using for an air cleaner/intake. have you changed or check it for dirt? check/clean the mass air flow sensor?

Also looks to me like you are going to need to address injector three, but not right now, get it running first.

P1247 maybe a left over code from the replacement.

Might suggest that you see if you can erase the codes and see what you got left over after an air cleaner and mass flow sensor check.

The first two are new. I didn’t even think about trying to clean the mass air flow sensor. I’m running a stock intake. The filter looks to be in real good shape. I can try cleaning that sensor as well. And injector 3, well, this truck is trying to kill me lol.

the last 4 are “permanent” codes. They showed up when the turbo died, or right before. The turbo one I’m assuming is cleared up with the new turbo. The dpf one I think is pretty obviously a fully plugged dpf.

If you need tuning, try Proven Diesel, their website asks whether the body style is a pick up or cab & chassis so I presume they can do tuning for C&C. Exhaust wise you can buy a deelete pipe that replaces the dpf section of the exhaust for a few hundred $. One word of caution is whatever you buy, triple check to make sure that is fits C&C as the tuning and hardware fitment can be different between a pickup and C&C. Good luck!!
