Anyone have any ideas on budget air conditioning? It’s getting really hot in Texas and driving the 66 daily is a sweaty workout.
aside from vintage air, etc and buying a complete from a donor truck ( nobody will sell the system around here without selling the whole car/ truck) what other options are there for a budget of ~$400
I had a crazy idea of buying one of those window units and disassembling it, having the compressor be driven by the engine instead of an electric motor, and using evaporator and everything else in other places as required. I know they use different refrigerant than cars but why is that. Why could I not use one of those in a truck, custom brackets to fit? Help me out I don’t know much about ac, I would love to know much more about how these ac systems differ
Get a small rooftop rv/travel trailer unit. Cut a hole in your roof and mount it. Large alternator with an inverter. Or are those units already 12 volts? Dunno.

I have most of the AC unit out of my 77, Since it's a wood cutting/hunting/wheeling play truck, I don't plan on putting it back in, I'm not pulling the dash apart to take the evaporator coils out, but you can have the compressor, mounts and everything else I'm removing you pay shipping which I think would be under 400...
I have played with the idea of fitting the A/C from an 05 expedition that I have into my truck. Not a lot of info out there and I have to assume it has to do with trying to engineer it to work. That being said the offer of the 77 parts above might do you well. I'd be interested to know if making a system could work. You can basically swap any motor into any other car, why is A/C this enigma that there seems to be little information about?

You’re joking, right? I am.
You kid, but I saw a window unit cut into the cab of a truck at a show. The truck was a flat bed and the window unit was kind of integrated in with tool boxes and such. I actually missed it the first time I walked by the truck.
Okay so I found a used Old Air unit that comes with the unit it’s self, condensers, and the electronics. So all I would need would be a compressor, lines, and an expansion valve. I think? He selling it for $100 in working condition.
how would I go about mounting a modern compressor to my FE engine? I don’t want to spend the hefty price of $150 from a place like vintage air. I’ll be using a sanden compressor
I also have an old system I want to use. A major problem is that r134a refrigerant will not work with the old components. The expansion valve will not work properly, and the condenser will be too small, among other things. We both need an expert's advice.
