What's elec and consently on - drvr's side?

Just got a new battery wed. and tonight is was low. Started truck, drove around the block, then turned truck off. Tried to start it, slow turn then clicking. Light were dim.
Disconnected the battery, took back to store and exchanged for new one.
While connecting the new battery, heard something on driver's side click on when I connected the battery cables.
What is that?
And is that something that should be always on?
And will it drain my battery (again)?

Probably, but it would help to know what truck you've got to pinpoint the problem.
And I bet the store just loves exchanging batteries that are only discharged.

I have a 86 f-150 with a 351W.
And I don't know about how the store felt, but I needed my truck by 5:40am this morning (which it's almost that time now) to get to work. I wouldn't have gone for the "we'll charge it for you, come back tomorrow" speech. To all, Have a good day.

ok, it's a cigarette lighter size relay or something like that, on the driver's side, on the back firewall.
Stopped at Auto Zone, they didn't know what it was and couldn't find the part in their stock. Advance Auto did their test, and it came up saying "battery is ok, low charge from alternator.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hate to state this but have you put a new alternator in it? Are your belts tight? I think I know what your talking about as far as the little noise when you reconnect the battery I believe mine does it as well. Later

no to the alternator. And I think one of my belts is loose. Last week I was also having a problem. I tried to connect the battery wrong. In my truck the + is black and the - is red, so based on what I always went by (+red and - black) I tried to connect the battery a few times that way. I'm thinking I might have fried a few more wires than I thought. Maybe not all the way though, but maybe just badly cooked them. And I'm sure it didn't help any of the relays and soleniods either. Looks like I going hunting in my truck for some slightly cooked electrical items and replace them.
If anyone knows what that thing is on my firewall, please let me know. I would like to start with replacing that. Thanks.

do you have a digital camera to take a pic of the piece in question? It is probably just a bad alternator get one run it if it doesn't help take it back. Later

If you hooked up the battery wrong you probably fried the diodes in the alternator. It will cause it to discharge the battery while sitting

It wasn't a total hook up. It fried the fusable link within a few seconds. I'm hoping that by it doing that, it prevented any damage to the alternator or anything else. During the second stupid attemp if connecting the battery, the fusable link smoked and got red, but didn't fry through.
When I finally got it right, I didn't replace the slightly fried fusable link. So I think that is the weak current flow I'm having.
So to cover my bases (and hoping it's not the alternator) I'm going to replace the fusable link, the starter soleniod, and the the connection to the alternator<if it looks bad). Hopefully that will cure my problem. If not, I'll yank the alternator out, get it tested, and if needed, replace that too.
Worse comes, I'll visit a local auto shop and let them figure it out. Would hate to give someone $200 or more to fix something simple, but I need my truck.
