-53 F100 with F150 front suspension

Hi. I recently discovered a problem with the power steering om my -53 F100. It has an -87 F150 front suspension and power steering/brakes. Having the truck on idle, the steering slowly turns left by it self. It also feels a bit jerky when driving. Pump has oil. Anybody that can advice on this issue? Thanks.

You will need to rebuild your steering box . Some of your valves are leaking or springs are broken . I'm sure there are rebuilts or many salvage units available . PS I would probably avoid driving it as it could take notion to override your intentions .

Thanks EBEAR for the advice. Will have to check the steering box then.

Ford PS pumps are notorious for going bad over time and burning the fluid. It is very common in the Power Stroke trucks and a system flush with new fluid will fix the problem many times. I would try that before doing anything else. May sound stupid but check belt tension before doing anything.

Hi, and thanks for the advice. Belt and oil are checked and replaced so I guess a rebuild would be the next step. I've ordered a kit from Broncograveyard. Just waiting for it to get here.

OK so my steering box repair kit arrived last Thursday and I've started the rebuild. Today I ran into a problem and thought someone on this forum could help out in sorting this out. In the kit there were 4 blue teflon rotary rings that according to the (rather poor) instruction should go somewhere on (or near) the valve spool. But I cannot figure out where these rings should go? I've attached some pic's and maybe one of you experts can tell. When I pulled the worm and valve assembly out of the body, the middle grove on the valve spool (sleve with 3 grooves on) was full of reddish grains, probably the destroyed rotary rings. But, that middle groove only fits 2 of these rings so where should the other 2 go? I also attached a pic on the steering box so you can see what I have. To mention, I have scanned Youtube and only one video is about this type of box but it does not show these teflon rings.

I hope you have the right rebuild kit, The box in your picture is a pre 1980 box, not from a 1987 f150

Yes you're right. I checked on broncograveyard and it seems to be a pre-80s box. In the registration papers it says "front clip 1987 F150" but they migjht gotten the figures mixed and it should be 1978. The rebuild kits seems to have the same sort of sealings and teflon rings though.

Looked at this video
and its the same steering box I have. When this guy pulls out the worm and valve assembly (same as mine) there are no teflon rings on the sleeve! Everything else in the kit fits on the box. The box in the video is a -73 F100 steering box so it seems I have one too.
The question is then, where did all that reddish "grain" come from? Could it be from the pump since I did not find any other broken O-ring or teflon ring ?

Is it possible that someone used a power steering stop leak in it and that is your red grain ?

I have no clue. I have checked some rebuild videos of oil pumps and from what I can see there are no O-rings or other stuff that could get from the pump to the steering box. The problem I got with the steering was after having to swerve very sharply from right to left to gain control after thew car side jumped. Maybe some previous old stop leak got loose from that hard handling.

I am positive I now have found the steering box problem and the reason for the mysterious reddish grain inside the worm and valve assembly. Inside the dip stick tube on the servo pump there is another plastic sleeve tube that tightens the dipstick and keep it in place (see pictures). A major part of that red plastic sleeve tube have gotten loose and wandered into the pump and kind of grinded inside the pump and transported into the steering box where it got stuck inside the valve assembly. I took out the remaining part and it was really brittle. Replaced it with a rubber bushing type that will work as dip stick keeper and tightener. Anyhoo.....the box is rebuilt and pump flushed clean. Now I will test the function on the bech before re-installing everything.
