I have been planning to move to an AOD to match the 1988 302 however, My son was asking if there was any form of synchronized gears to upgrade this old transmission before we dismiss it entirely. He is my partner in this project and prefers a standard tranny. This seems unlikely but I know there are some very creative folks out there, any thoughts?

I swapped in a T98. Basically the synchronized version of the T9 crash box. Almost a bolt in deal. Driveshaft has to be shortened and rear mount height. You have to get the 48-52 version that has the rear mount cast in. The later style doesn't have it. I got mine from an F6.
You might prefer a later trans with overdrive like the T5. Do your research to get the correct gear ratios and tail housing to put the shifter where you need it. Good luck with your project.
I put an M5R2 from a 95 F150 into mine. It's fine as a bargain but that's about it. It's a top shifter and it lines up almost perfectly with the factory hole on the floor plate. However the main problem with the ones i've driven is that they don't like fast shifting, and sometimes just refuse to find a gear whatsoever.
Though it's also within half an inch in overall length to an AOD, which means you could swap between them without having to modify the driveshaft. If/when i blow mine up i'm going to swap to an AOD.
