I was recently in a accident and i bought a '96 F150 XL Reg Cab LGBD pretty much identical to the one i daily drive (Except its 4x4 and a base model) he was parting it out and i just bought the entire truck from him. the plan is to take the parts we need that it has to fix it, then later on take the transfercase (BW1356) and put it in the truck along with the front TTB Axle (after i replace some parts) but we dont know if we can just swap the tailshaft or not, my father said not to take the tailshaft of of the daily to look, but to compare gaskets, however i cant find a picture of a 2wd tailshaft gasket but i can of a 4wd tailshaft gasket, Trasmission in both (im assuming, going of my fathers word here) are 4R70W Transmissions the one in the parts truck is no good so cant use it
if you need pictures let me know and ill take some and update this forum the first chance i get
Did the transmission get damaged in the accident? Not sure I'm following as to why you can't reuse it. The output shafts are different for a 4x4 and 4x2 4R70W, not just the extension/adapter housings. You have to remove the "guts" to retrieve the correct output shaft.

no we're wanting to change the tailshafts transmissions its usual self we can reuse the transmission
Ok I think I follow. You want to convert the 4x4 transmission to a 4x2 and then at a later date covert back to a 4x4? Either way, and unfortunately, to do this you need to swap output shafts along with the tailshaft housings. You’ll also need to use the driveshaft from the 4x2 assuming both trucks are the same wheelbase.

no convert a 4x2 to a 4x4 and stop there id never convert a 4x4 to 4x2 4x4 runs deep in my family and the trucks are identical the only difference is ones a 2wd XLT and the others a 4wd XL
Ok yeah, you need to disassemble both transmissions and swap the output shafts as they are different lengths. You'll also need to swap the oil pans and oil filters along with the tail shaft housings. But you might as well rebuild the whole thing while it's out and in pieces in front of you. Do not swap the valve bodies as they are different for those years, the cases aren't the same.
