Odd thought about SD 401/477/534 exhaust manifolds

My 63 C850 has had a small exhaust leak where the block meets the manifold since I bought it a year ago. I picked up some gaskets but I'm still intermittently soaking the bolts with penetrating oil and trying to coax them loose without breaking any off in the block.

All that aside, I know these manifolds are notorious for cracking. When purchasing exhaust manifold gaskets I was surprised to find that they were readily available. That's almost never the case when looking for SD engine stuff. So I got curious.

It seems that gasket (Fel-Pro# MS9487) is shared with some dodge trucks and some detroit diesel engines. At least according to Fel-Pro. I couldn't find anything more specific but it makes me wonder if there isn't another exhaust manifold that might work on these old beasts. With the gasket being the same, we know the ports and bolt holes at least line up. Now that doesn't mean that the thing won't hit the frame or that the bolts don't go in at some silly angle, but if you have an SD engine with a cracked manifold, it might be worth looking into.

The auto parts store exhaust manifold gaskets are probably "universal fitz-alls" because there's no way a Dodge manifold would bolt on a Ford.

That might be so, but I held one up against the head of the 69 534 I've got and there are no extra holes and none of them are slotted.
While looking into it I ran across a Detroit number (obsolete) that is supposedly the same gasket.
There is something out there that at least lines up. That doesn't mean it would bolt on or exit anywhere useful if it did.
I'm not telling anyone to rush out and buy Dodge / detroit manifolds. I'm just saying if someone can't find a good original manifold for the SD engine, it might be worth keeping your eyes peeled.
