I have spoken with several suppliers and each has a different opinion (Probably based on what they need to sell).
I an doing a build on a 38 Ford 1-ton pickup, retaining the 85hp flathead but want to tweak it a little which retaining enough vacuum for a booster on the brakes. I want to upgrade the cam and valves but know too much of a cam can adversely affect the vacuum. I am currently looking at an Isky racing cam with 249 Intake Duration, 249 Exhaust Duration, 111 ° Lobe Separation. Can anyone confirm that will give me a boos in HP while not adversely affecting the vacuum.
Don't know much about cams, I'm running what is purported to be a stock Merc Cam in my otherwise stock 8ba with EAB heads. I'm happy with the performance and low end torque. If you post your question over on the Ford Barn I'm sure you'll get some good info. There is a lot of knowledge over there on all things flathead. JMO.
I've had a stock '51 Ford grind on my 36 half ton and my 39 ton and half with the larger bore (Merc bore) for years. Love 'em. You won't be able to lug down with load to 800 rpm like the prewars but much more driveable. Larry
Larry, above, nailed it. I've a 51 grind in all my pre war Fords and they come alive on todays roads. My 51, with O/D will cruise with the best at 70/75 as long as your tires are radial and you're aware of the old brakes. Easy spurts to 90 or so, just like a kid in HS when had a Hudson Hornet, and my poor buddies suffered with the flatmotors, The 308 6 would put'em in the weeds..... You can't use a 51 cam in the pre 8BA engines, but the grinds are readily available..... You'll love it. Also like above, you can't lug a load......... Larry in MN
